You don't have to pay. You can get the CVS version ( which is the latest and greatest ) for free. Granted you might have to deal with some bugs with HotOffThePress games, but older stuff already support will be fine.
You should consider what your are paying for... Technically, you can only pay once just to get the latest version. And go from there. But, the are the only ones working on DirectX gaming for Linux. I mean, jeez... $15. Considering all that you have to pay for using Linux, that's a SMALL price to pay for development of a handy product.
As for video codecs and such, you should pull the latest mplayer rpm. That should have MOST of the codecs you'd need. For DVDs, you can use mplayer, but I stick with Xine.
