I think somethings seriously wrong with my Tour.
On Saturday I blew the #1 plug on the highway. I reinstalled it and so far it was fine. Then today I blew the #2 spark plug on the highway!
I've just got Champion RS14YC6 plugs in there right now. What could be causing this? Two blown plugs in 4 days? Compression too high?
I've got 280,000km on this motor. I think i'm just going to change the plugs again on the car (which were done only 10,000km ago) and i'm going to Locktight them in there this time. If i get 60,000km out of the car i'll be happy and never have to change the plugs again.

What do you mean by "Blown". They didn't become unseated from the block but rather are no longer capable of spark right? How much driving before it happens? The engine is good and hot? I know it has been the coldest yet this year here in the GTA and wonder if temp may be part of the factor. After 10000kms ago likely was in the summer or so right?

Basically the plug and plug wire blew completely out of the head. When i opened the hood the plug with the wire was laying on top of the intake.
There was also a very strong smell of gas since the cylinder was completely exposed to the open air.

Uh, your heads are stripped, dude. The plug hole, that is.
They make a Helicoil repair kit for that.
Or you can go new heads!

Oh ya, one more thing...
The threads don't seem to be stripped. When i torque them back down they are in there pretty good. And it's it's not the same cylinder both times... it's two different cylinders.

Ok, i just checked the rest of the plugs. Almost every one was ready to pop out with only a few turns of the socket and extention. I didn't need a ratchet to break any of them free. I think the other 4 plugs would have only lasted another few days. But now they're in there good and tight.
So... how did these plugs get so loose? This is my winter car and isn't driven in the summer. Could the extreme heating and cooling of the head cause this since it's aluminum?
It must have been like this for a while since i've been having strange issues with the car. Odd idle, rough idle sturges in power delivery and at other times power drop offs, the smell of fuel in the cabin and vibration in the motor and tranny. Oddly enough as soon as i tightened the plugs most of these issues went away. I guess i'll have to keep an eye on it.

Are those double platinum plugs? If not, I would recommend putting double plats in there, ideally Motocraft ones. BTW, I wouldn't recommend loctite- I've found the opposite to be true- you need to ensure that the plugs DONT stick to the heads.
FWIW, vibration could loosen them, if they are not torqued properly. When you put them in, did you use a torque wrench? If not, an extra 'nip', usually, a quarter or eighth turn after the resistance is felt is all you would need.
Also, if it was a stored car, (like, say a mower over winter) did you loosen the plugs and put a drop or two of oil on the plug and put the plugs back in loose but then forget? Or maybe someone did this for you, but without your knowledge?

... or maybe its haunted? I know mine is. My car only ever acts up after I start to talk about trading it in. These babies have personalities, y'know! To fix - talk to the old girl, tell her you're not gonna trade her, and it'll be fine! She'll fix herself. (Trust me, that's not the worst piece of advice you'll find on these boards. I've solved several mysteries by praying to the car gods! )
