My codes (172 & 173) tell me the 02 Sensor needs replacing. Went out and looked and it seems pretty easy to get at. It's in the front of the engine just behind the radiator and you can reach it from the top.

Haynes book says use a special slotted long socket which I don't have, but it appears I might be able to get a box end wrench on the hex with enough room to turn it. Anybody replace one of these babies? What tools did get by with?

Since it's winter here and a 60 mile trip to a parts store I'm thinking of ordering one online and having it delivered. Does anyone have any favorite online auto parts stores with good prices and don't kill you on shipping?

In the J.C. Whitney catalog there are 02 sensors listed. They seem to be sort of a universal part, esp. the 3-wire ones like the Contour has.

Whitney part description: 3-wire Oxygen Sensor. For all cars, trucks with 3-wire screw-in sensor. With splicing kit and instructions. SL132749N w/platinum tip. $53.99 + 11.99 shiping.

Wonder if I should go for that one?

Nah, man, I would not go for the universal sensor. How cheated would you feel after spending 66 bucks for something that will not work for you. Get the right one, and while you're at it, order the socket, it will make your life much easier. I've replaced them on various cars plenty of times, and it's a straight forward and simple task. You want the right part, and the right tool. Trying to cut corners is a very risky game to play with your car, I wouldn't do it.

as with tires and allignments these cars are sensitive to the O2 sensors also. I do beleive some have tried universal sensors and had issues. personally I would pay the few extra $'s in this case for a good sensor as it will have a direct effect on gas milage, and you could save money there is the car is running its best, but that is your call

When you guys talk about a "good" 02 sensor, do you mean an OEM part from a Ford dealer or one from NAPA when I ask for a '95 Contour 02 sensor?

Same thing with the slotted tool. Is this a Ford dealer part or a NAPA part?

When I say NAPA, I mean auto parts stores in general.

Thanks.

Online I am finding "Denso" brand (quality Jap part I believe) for 95 Contour GL 2.0L::

Denso Universal 4-wire 02 sensor for $83.53

Denso OE type 02 sensor for $108.04

Is the OE type the one?

Is the price about right?

Expensive little bugger!

Napa, Advanced Auto Parts, Auto Zone... any of the above mentioned will be able to sell you the right part as well as the tool.

Since you mentioned Napa:

OEM Style O/2 sensor with connector $79.99

As far as the tool, any Napa stocks this socket and will be able to ship you the socket with the sensor.

Thanks Niss. I also checked out AutoZone online and they sell a Bosch OEM type 02 Sensor for the 95 Contour for $65.99 plus a 3-piece 02 sensor socket set for $15.00. Total $80.99 plus shipping.

Bosch is a brand name, right?

And ordering online will save me a 60 mile drive in my 02 sensor challenged Contour.

You guys are right: then I'll have the right tools that I will always need and use in future. A 3-socket 02 sensor set should cover all makes and models.

Hmm...I also need a IAC unit.

PS: JUst noticed AutoZone offering FREE ground shipping on all orders. Way to go!

Yup, Bosch is a brand name all right. You should not have to do an O/2 sensor often, but when you do, now you got the tools, and the 3 piece should cover just about most as you said. Good choice.

Yes, and I'm glad you talked me into it. I'm rather a cheapskate.

At AutoZone online I can get the following:

Bosch OEM type 02 sensor: $65.99
Sensor sockets 3-piece $15.00
Idle Air Control Valve (Wells brand) $51.99
free shipping

Total: $132.98
==========

Seems like a pretty good deal.

Nothing wrong with trying to save a buck or two, but sometimes it's not worth it. Anyway, good purchase.
