I'll never forget trying to shave, 5 people to a mirror, in 5 minutes.

One thing I cannot stress enough that will help you in a MAJOR way thru bootcamp is study beforehand! What I mean is, learn your General Orders, front and back, by number, and perfectly...word for word. You will have to recite these at the most inopportune moments, such as when you're standing firewatch in the middle of the night and an officer decides to do a spot-check...

Also, take advantage of any pool-recruit programs your recruiter offers. These usually entail a bit of prac (the teachings you'll learn in bootcamp), plus physical conditioning. Get used to doing pullups, situps, and long runs, as these three items are required to pass your PFT's. (The Marines, I believe, are still the only service that will kick you out for failing a PFT.) I'm sure someone will correct me, but I think its 13 pullups, 80 situps in 2:00, and then the run (can't remember distance or time, right now, heh).

PT in the Army for 17 - 21 yr olds passing consisted of: Back in '93 - '96

52 sit-ups in 2:00
42 sit-ups in 2:00
2 mile run under 15:54

Following those 3-rules from Trapps will work wonders:

In the Army you can be promoted to E2 prior to enlisting by recruting another recruit. I highly recommend you get your E2 prior to going in, why? a lot more money!

Marine standards are quite a bit higher than that unfortnately...

And if the recruiter likes you enough, he can hook you up with the E2. Mine for example, just put that I recruited two people (whom he had enlisted also that month), bam..E2.

It all just depends. And just remember, some MOS's sound really 'exciting' (infantry) think about your future though. Make the military help YOU....I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

I gave my brother this exact advice when he entered the Marines. Since obviously I've never been in the Marines, I think it's good advice for anyone in life and you learn it well from experience and screwing up.
He goofed up now and then, but for the most part he followed the advice. This from a kid who had an authority problem all his life and never wanted to listen to anyone. He shaped up fast.
It's funny too because I always tried to teach him this stuff growing up. Do what you're told as fast as you can so you can then have "you" time. Don't always question, just do it and get it over with and you'll understand the why's eventually. He just never got it. It took the Marines to finally pound this concept into his head. lol
He did some reflection and told us that he now sees what we were trying to tell him all those years.

He returned not too long ago from Iraq, where he got into some pretty hairy situations, but his experiences have only affected him positively. He is still a goofball that wants to play videogames all the time, but he's also matured really well.

It's so nice to see how much he's grown up. The Marines really did him well. I used to hate him because he never followed the rules, but now I'm really proud of him.

btw, he started out at Paris Island, but is now in SD.

Its IMPOSSIBLE not to goof up.

You can do everything 120%. Its never good enough in bootcamp, just remember that. Bootcamp is 99% mental. the sooner you realize that the quicker bootcamp will be 'enjoyable' and it can be. There ae lots of times I enjoyed in bootcamp.

It's beeen a while, but the PFT in the 1986 was:

20 Pull-ups
80 Sit-ups in 2:00 min.
3 miles in 18 minutes

This would net a perfect score of 100.

The best I could ever muster was 20/80/19:00 flat.

That long arsed run along the fencline of the airport around MCRD/SD...

The mental stuff is so true - be prepared for it. You will screw up, you will be (figuratively) beaten down, and you will not be fast or smart enough.

Then something happens, and 3rd phase rolls around, you start to click and think you'll actually make it. They build you up; and into a United States Marine.

That's still the basics, Trapps, few years back, they changed the pull ups, you used to be able to 'kip', now you have to do 'dead hang' pull ups.

Also, right before I got out, they changed the sit ups as well. No 'kipping' there either....that's all I can remember.
