Read my stored codes (KOEO) yesterday. Did the jumper under hood, then sat inside car and read flashing CEL. Took about 10 attempts before I got it straight.

Results:

Hard Codes
519

Memory Codes
172
173
519

I still have to look up what these codes mean.

Codes 172 & 173 mean O2 sensor detects mixture "too lean" "too rich."

Does that mean its dead?

Could a dead 02 sensor cause any drivability problems like a subtle loss of power while on the highway?

Lots of good info on EEC-IV control systems (for Contours, this is only 1995) at:

http://www.dalidesign.com

There is a code lookup table (2 and 3 digit codes). The "free sample" pages also included EEC-IV introduction and basic test overview.

I havenâ??t had O2 sensor problems on my Contour (yetâ?¦), so I did some quick searching. Interesting info:

Your car is now 10 years old. Oxygen sensors are practically a tune-up item at that age; Iâ??d replace them if thereâ??s any hint of a problem.

You might also try the engine-running test (look at the â??TESTâ? section at dalidesign), but I suspect theyâ??ll just confirm the O2 sensor codes.

The 519 code is for your power steering pump. Have you had power steering problems? If not, it may just be a bad pressure sensor.

Thanks for the info. I'll check that out now.

I forgot to mention the power steering pump code. Under the hood I previously noticed the 3 wires are broken that go to a switch or sensor or something on the steering pump system. No doubt that's why the 519 codes.

I plan a tuneup once we get some warmer weather. Check plugs and wires and maybe replace. New IAC and new 02 sensor.

Let us know how it works out!

And let me know how hard it is to get those O2 sensors out...
