I had the exact same problem in my Probe GT. The lights would dim, it'd squeal really loud and my battery guage (yup, the PGT had one) would decrease dramatically.

A few months of this and then my alternator seized up completely. I'm assuming the symptoms are related. For me, I believe the alternator was just beginning to fail under pressure (power steering use, acceleration) forcing the belt to attempt two different speeds (causing slippage).
