Since this problem started suddenly, and occurs a minute or so after you turn on your heater, it sounds like it could possibly be a leaking heater core. The smell of antifreeze is usually pretty distinctive though, and you should be able to distinguish antifreeze odors from other stuff.

Could also possibly be mold from trapped moisture from the airconditioning system, due to a plugged condensate drain line.

Does the odor occur with the temperature control in the "cold" position, and using other air outlets, like the defrost or vent settings?
