that's right, we need another one... Now this will be the people mover, so the most important thing is safety... I'm looking at a 98-99 Volvo V70 with about 150K on it... it goes for about 15 grand - taxes in. The thing is that we need a wagon (dog needs a place of it's own and the soon to come baby needs extra space for all the things you need to have around them)...
Any thoughts about that?
thanx a lot

Nothing against you but I don't understand why people think they need a mini van or station wagon as soon as they have a family. If you can't fit the baby's stuff in the trunk of a car there's a problem. That being said if your going down that road how about a Mazda 6 wagon or are you dealing with a tight budget? You may also want to consider a Subaru or Audi A4 Avant. You have lots of choices in that market segment. What makes you lean toward the Volvo?

Just thought i'd point that out since you decided to bash his choice for a wagon. Its the same reason i'm getting a 9-2X.

Lots of excellent reasons to buy a new V70, but are you really prepared for the maintenance costs of a 6 year old vehicle that's out of warranty?
Just for comparison' sake - check out a new Focus wagon or one that's a year old.
The interior volume is reasonably close to the Volvo and maintenance won't be an issue. What's even better is that for less than $390 / month (taxes in, no money down) you can get a full load including heated leather, heated mirrors, traction control, power moonroof, 6-pack CD, side air bags, auto, foglights, LATCH system, keyless entry, keyless remote start, tinted windows, etc, etc.
Fuel economy's pretty good, decent power, it'll tow 1000 lbs, you can get a 5-speed and save a grand, and my wife can vouch for how easy it is to haul two small kids and all their stuff. And it's comes with the bumper to bumper warranty.
Just my two cents, but just what a young family needs IMO.

okay, First thanx for your input... second let's talk.
Just to get this out of the way. My favourite car is a saab 93 sport sedan (best looking dashboard), and my favourite wagon would be an audi a4 avant. So yes, I've considered saab and audi...
Why wagon? That's simple: I have a Giant Schnauzer who weights about 100 pounds. He needs to stay in the back.
My second choice is the Subaru Forester. However, I've heard some really scary stories about Subaru's electrical problems. Not to say that Volvos don't have electrical problems, but the dealers (at least some) really do help.
The thing is this. I don't like to lease cars. I do not know what I'm gonna need (carwise) 3 years from now.... twins, triplets... who knows?... anyway. Instead of leasing or buying a brand new car I think it would be wise to buy a second hand car until you actually figure out what we're gonna need. This is my first kid (or kids... we don't know yet...) so I have no ideea what's coming...
I plan to keep this car for a couple of years. I'm not that worried about maintenance since we're not gonna put a lot of kms on this car.
My big thing about volvos is safety... I do a lot of work for volvo canada and I know a lot about their cars... at least from their marketing point of view. If I were to buy/lease a new car, I would go with the new V50. The safety features in that little car blow away ANY other wagon...
I thought about the focus too, but I think volvos are safer and if I have to pay a bit more on service, well that's life...
Thanx again for your posts... P.S. Asked the same thing on a volvo board... not one reply... you guys rock!

Witch Volvo board did you post your questions to? If you tried the Canadian Volvo club, the forums aren't very active. (I think you can see a whole years worth of posting on just one page) You should try www.brickboard.com It's the main site. When I had my 1990 740 turbo wagon, the folks there were VERY helpful. (Mind you, I don't know if the FWD forums are of the same quality as the RWD forums.) But, has a personnal opinion, my parents both have a Subaru Forester and a Volvo V70. If you take the Volvo get at least a light pressure turbo, the standard engine doesn't quite have enought power (at least for someone who drives athleticly). But for long drive, nothing can beat a Volvo seat. The Subaru Forester has been working very well so far. Very nice car also. Hope it helps... Eric...

No bashing, just curious about his reasons for a wagon in the first place. If his dog travells with him frequently then it is a necessity.

OMG thankfully someone else thinks along the same lines as me. How on earth did our parents ever manage to stuff 3 kids and two dogs and all the associated crap into the old 65 Valliant? Oh do remember these were the days when the folks had to take the dirty diapers back home to wash. How did we kids ever survive without DVD players or some other type of 7/24 entertainment?
Just pack the kid in the back with the hound, don't pack the house and carry on your merry way.

One used to be able to put everything in a car like that because you didn't need the child seats et al that you do now.
But seriously, people overpack in a big way. What ever happened to travelling light?
That said, the last time I went camping, I filled my SVT and Shannon filled her Sentra.......
I have been thinking about a used Volvo as a hauler and winter vehicle for a while. I have seen so many run into the 300,000 km range that even a 200,000 km car makes sense as a second vehicle.
