There is a silencer in the intake before the air box that is restrictive. It was discontinued in about 97 or 98. Many people have reported a noticable difference in performance from removing the silencer. They described it as looking like a "madusa". I'm sure that if you look at the intake you can figure it out. It is best to leave the basic fender intake in place so that you still get cold air intake, just get rid of the restrictive inner silencer.
