For that honestly I would go with apple, that is what they dominate the market in, I am suprised nobody has mentioned them yet. True it might not be the cheapeast route, but that is what everyone uses in those industries for the most part. Not to mention that Apple generally has the best customer service in the business, and you don't have to deal with spyware and viruses like PC users do.

If you wanted to go PC, Alienware has some nice entry level systems and has started to make workstations. I'd reccomend much of what everyone else has said before although for a video card you would probably be better off with an Nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL series.

Main reason I didn't recommend Apple is because he doesn't seem to be trying to get into it professionally. True, most use macs to do video editing, but a PC can do just about anything a mac can do, just may take a few more seconds of "thinking" The downside list to macs would far outweigh their upsides for someone that wants to edit family videos etc. and use the computer for other everyday uses (games, www, etc) Alienware does make a good computer, but they do charge a premium for their systems.

If you can build it yourself, I think thats always the best way to go. Individual parts have warranties, just make sure all the parts you buy have 1 or more year warranties. Worst case scenario you have to pull a part yourself, but then again, I don't know if companies still do on site tech support anyways since it has been so long since I bought a pre-made system.

Stay away from alienware, their quality has droped hard. and they cost way too much for what you get, your buying the name.

And Macs, 2 of my friends just got macs, nice little computers, good for people who dont know alot about computers etc. If you have used a PC most of your life, stick with PC if you have used a mac look at macs. I am a PC person because you can go to store and build your own computer, everything you want, nothing you dont. Cant do that with macs.

How is a PC better for everyday use? Less stable, more likely to get viruses and spyware, not as user friendly as far as software goes, there is much more out there for mac than you realize; Office, norton products, quicken, not to mention a good amount of games: The sims, doom3, UT2004, Half-life, call of duty, battlefield.....

I don't really agree with this statement that much either. I have been building my own systems for a good 10 years or so, but it isn't for everyone, if you don't know how to troubleshoot hardware and software problems well, you probably shouldn't be building your own computer.

I wasn't aware of this, but that is good to know I suppose. I think they are one of the few larger companies that still have tech support based in this country, FWIW.

This is true, one of Apple's biggest downfall's but also one of their best qualaties. Because of this Windows will never be able to match Apple's stability.

Linux!!! huray!! too bad its so hard to get going, and there are limited number of programs avaliable for it, other than that is awesome.

Mac OS is stable, but OS X is a pain to have to do IT work on, everything is burried somewhere. I think thats Macs down fall, atleast for me, its easy to a point, then its an absolute pain. I had the luck to work in a school district doing IT work, and they were split with the number of PCS and Macs. SO i got a nice taste of both worlds.

Asking for Computer Advise is like asking for advise on the Opposite Sex.............
You Will get more than one answer. Reading through the replys, there are some things we agree on(OK we're not arguguing about it) and some things common. You should end up with a good machine.....
