Given your price range I would definitely look for something Toyota/Honda. I'm a fan of the Camry (92-96 and 97-02 generations) myself as the reliable family hauler. That Audi for $3K sounds scary, I've never heard one of that year selling for that cheap ... probably has another $3K worth of problems hiding!
Obligatory suggestion for another Contour  always would recommend, and you know full well costs for parts on these cars!
