95,400 miles w/automatic
-stalls at low rpm, especially when going into reverse
-breaks up when revved into higher rpms in neutral
-shakes at idle in gear, loud inside
-good on gas
-good power on the highway
-why does it run so rough?
Thanks

Did you try the obvious first? By obvious I'm refering to plugs wires and filters?

GREAT place to start is Spark plugs and wires, chances are your origionals are still in there. Get some motorcraft or Autolite (I personally suggest motorcraft) and replace those plugs and wires. As for your hard idle, Its very likely your IAC valve, I have found that when the IAC is getting sticky its worse in a contour with an ATX(automatic) then it is for the cars with the MTX(5 speed manual). the IAC is called the Idle air controller valve, its very common for a contour IAC valve to start to get sticky at around 100K miles, sometimes earlier.

...and note that the IAC can be cleaned (no matter what Ford's documentation says). Plus it isn't a terribly expensive item to replace.

Firstly, thanks to all of you who have responded thus far. When I bought this car, it had 67,000 miles on it. I had the timing belt replaced, and a full-tune up done. I also had a new fuel tank installed because the old one was cracked at the pump location. Since then, I have had a sensor replaced for the trans to shift correctly. But, the idle has always been an issue with it. I am not surprised that my mechanic didn't figure this out. After all, he did work for a Ford dealer prior to becoming a manager at the shop I use. You'd think he would have nailed it, you people did Just amazing! What does this part cost? Can I do it myself? I need to have this car perform as perfectly as possible. I will purchase another vehicle this summer, as an additional vehicle. This Contour is comfortable, and handles very well.I abhor the loudness inside the car. But, I guess that's the price you pay for economy. I have experienced other four-cylinder cars which are much quieter. Anyway, I found this site by surfing and it appears to be a very good source. Thanks again.

One more thing. The turn signal does not cancel. Any advice on that? I think those ar all the gripes I have. The factory radio is in need of replacing. I would love a cd/tape combo.

If you plan to keep the car - may I suggest - Ford Shop manual on CD, a cheap Haynes/Chilton manual(its not written in Technospeak) and maybe the Ford Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting manual(Ebay). And every Question you have will be answered....you may not understand the answer.....so , come here for an explaination.
Multi-Function Switch

Removal and Installation

NOTE:
Some illustrations in this procedure have steering wheel shown removed for clarity. It is not necessary to remove the steering wheel for turn signal switch service.(Unlike the OLD days when I would smack myself in the nose pulling off the steering wheel)

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove two screws and steering column upper shroud.
3. Depress the multi-function switch locking tab.
4. Slide multi-function switch (13K359) up and off of steering column.
5. Depress locking tabs on multi-function switch electrical connector and remove from the multi-function switch.
6. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

Thank you! I heard mention of replacing the motor mounts to also help smoothe out the 4 cylinder. Is there any truth to that? I really love the way this car handles, accelorates and cruises. This car can cruise 70-75 with ease all day long. However, local driving is way too buzzy. It's a shame. My previous ride was an '88 Aerostar shorty with a Taurus 3.0. It served it's purpose and I wished I had kept it and bouth the Contour anyway. It was a way useful machine.
