I got compression numbers from a guy on the focus fanatics forums. He says that shaving .040 = 10.8:1CR and that .045 = 11.0:1CR He sells zetec heads that are already prot and polished and shaved to the desired compression ratio. I am thinking about the .040 as he doesn't recommend anything more on pump gas. What is the factory compression ratio for these motors? I am not trusting the carpoint website as it is ussually wrong. Is ours 9.6:1? Also a copper headgasket is a good idea but is it necessary since miy stock one has held fine with 155k miles on it?

raising the cmpression will put a fair bit more stress on the gasket, so it may be best for piece of mind more than anything

Its definately for piece of mind , at 11:1 stock will blow, just a matter off time. Don't go for anyhting past 10.6:1 unless you want to spend alot of money for no extra gains (mods a harder/tuning harder/need better gas/etc.)

Could someone post the factory stroke and bore and head cc volume and factory head gasket thickness? My Haynes doens't list it and I already searched. Thanks

factory stroke is 88mm or 3.4646" and the bore is 84.8mm or 3.3386

OK I ordered Total seal piston rings for the zetec today, came to $200 including rings, break in lube, quick seat, and over night shipping once they get them on the 19th. Leak down should be between 1-2% verses stock of 10-20%. I used these in my turbo neon, good rings for sure. I am also considering cams if I can use focus cams with the hydraulic lifters, I don't see why I can't but please inform me if not why not. Thanks

Got the head gasket, bolts, valve cover gasket, oil, filter, antifreeze, and cam alignment tool today. Oreder the valve stem seal at $2.69 a piece, oil pan gasket $21.72, and rod bearings $40.58. Parts aren't cheap for this zetec! I almost have $500 in gaskets and porting and polishing attachments. Milling the head is going to be another $45.

$500 in gaskets? When I replaced my blown headgasket it only cost me around $250 in parts and that was with replacing intake/exhaust/head gasket + oil + oil filter + coolant + headbolts + milling head
also I asked Terry Haines about using Focus cams before and he said they wouldn't work. Although a Cougar guy might have a Focus regrind in his car. If you look on zxtuner.com they have a couple cams for the Contour/Cougar zetec.

I should have clarified, $500 in gaskets, and other parts. I am using total seal rings which are the best, new bearings, new valve stem seals, and a new oil pan gasket. All of these items are extra parts not needed for a head gasket.
