Searched and found nothing about doing it myself I have ported aluminum intake manifolds before, but not a head. I know to avoid going through the head into the oil/water passages, but I need more info. Like is it ok to completely polish the intake runners or should I leave them rough for turbulance? Open up the intake runners a lot and polish them? Open up the exhaust runners and polish them, polish the combustion chambers. Use some valve grinding compound to renew the seal of the valve to the valve seat and then have the head milled .040 to raise the compression ratio to 10.8:1. Replace the piston rings with total seal rings and replace the rod bearings as well. What do you guys think?

Be careful opening up the ports too much. It will kill your low end torque.

opening the ports too much will reduce velocity right, so maybe just remove harsh obstacles from the casting process and polish them up for even higher velocity potential. If anyone has a extra head laying around I would be willing to pay for shipping and possible trade. I have a new atx solenoid pack and a new TSS sensor and a used atx ecu that I would be willing to trade for a spare head. I also have a used MAF meter that is in unknown condition that I could throw in. email me or send a private message and keep the suggestions about the port and polish coming. Thanks

Thats right. If the ports are too open velocity will only be good in the upper RPM ranges, leaving the lower range with less throttle response, and almost no torque, which our engines dont exactly have an abundance of anyway.

That sounds good. The hardest part is keeping all the ports the same, not removing more material from one than the other, etc. Usually gasket matching and removal of any casting flash and rough spots is enough to notice, although I have no experience with how good Zetec heads are from the factory. Just dont hog out the ports and you should be ok.

Remember, we don't drive Hondas, we are not overly concerned about upper end power.
Zetecs should not rev past 7000 rpm.
Our strength is mid range, the 3000-5000 rpms.
Improve low end (less than 3000 rpm) and mid range power for best results.

OK looks like its a go, I am going to do the port and polish on my zetec head, I will have the valves ground afterwords. Maybe do the valves myself with a tool I found at Knecths Auto Parts, it connects to the valve and you spin it with grinding compound between the valve and the valve seat. I still have good compression about 180 psi per cylinder, so the valves shoudln't need much. I am going ot have the head shaved maybe .35 to .40 to raise compression, if anyone knows how much the compression will change as the head is shaved that would be great. Thanks

Throw on a copper head gasket if your going to shave the head and raise compression.
