This is ridiculous. If a kid wants to have sex... he's going too. It would be better for a person to know how to have "safe" sex and mention abstinence than just saying not to have sex because if/when they do, they will most likely get pregnant because lack of proper education.

I honestly don't know what the big deal is... I never learned anything from the school teachings... we always made fun of the pictures... I was in 5th grade! I learned more from friends and family than anyone else.

This year, Bush's budget includes $270M earmarked specifically for abstinence education. The budget includes matching funds for states, which has had the net effect of causing the states to divert funds from comprehensive sex education to abstinence-only education. This matching fund component was, of course, a method of ensuring states adopted the curriculum.

When Bush was Gov of TX, he heavily promoted abstinence education. The results of that effort have been analyzed extensively.

Sooooooo....the left gets pissed when the right attempts indoctrination and brainwashing?? I wonder if Nostrils is leading any studies into the teaching of severely distorted history (or anything other than abstinence, for that matter) that our youths are forced to learn.

Not sure what specifically you're ranting about, but I do know that things won't improve until we stop seeing everything as left vs. right and start seeing it as dumb vs. intelligent.

I'm confused, are people upset that abstinence is being promoted or is it that they using half-truths and lies to do it?

Viss, please don't tell me you think there is no liberal indoctrination of our youths in public schools.

The left is upset that abstinence is being taught in schools, and they'll be using this story as a reason to support its ban. The left incorrectly, but successfully, labels the teaching of abstinence as a teaching or moral and religious values. The fact that it's the only way to prevent STDs and pregnancy gets completely ignored. All these scientists that say sex is great for 12 year-olds like to ignore this fact.

Sex education is something that should entirely be left to parents. I'd rather our kids learn science, math, and history instead.

The reason I posted this article is because I was disgusted at the garbage being taught in the schools in question.

Personally I think schools should teach comprehensive sex-ed, of course all along saying how abstinence is the only 100% foolproof solution for avoiding disease and pregnancy. Seems like common sense to me; why is it such a problem for Bush?

that is how i learned. my parents preached abstinance and my six older cousins were prime examples of how not to do things. combined i formulated a plan that keeps me worry free. this would not be possible if i had only heard the dribble in that article.

disclaimer: i am not accusing my parents of spewing lies and misinformation.

I need to know more about what you consider "liberal indoctrination." I've read about a few overly-PC items making it into curricula here and there in the past decade or so, so I might agree on some of them. But it's not a zero-sum game - introducing a negative to the situation doesn't cancel out another negative.

No one was against teaching abstinence when it was included as part of a comprehensive sex-ed curriculum. But now, through his actions, Bush has now essentially made it an either/or choice - you don't get the matching funds if you teach anything other than abstinence. I can't think of any motives that don't involve morality or religion that would prompt him to do this.

Any evidence for either assertion?

Are schools with a comprehensive sex-ed curriculum eliminating all mention of the benefits of abstienence? Mine certainly didn't when I went through it.

And I've never read any scientific study that says sex is great for 12 year olds, or, more importantly, that high school kids in general should be having it.

That's valid. But it does mean that you are against the President's efforts here.

I think the greater issue is that sexual education wouldn't be so necassary if sex wasn't flashed in front of children in every media available. Now, don't get me wrong, I like me some women, but sometimes you have to ask yourself is that really needed. Yes, it is 100% the parents responsibility to teach their children morals and monitor what they watch on TV. But, if our society didn't promote sexual promiscutity (sp?) then most likely we wouldn't need SEX education. I remember just 10 years ago in high school, I don't remember my sex ed class being so detailed (I don't know what today's is like, I can only assume).

With that said, back to work.
