OK Team, I need some help, actually a co-workers daughters' 1995 Zetec 'tour with the CD4E needs the help. She has owned this vehicle for less than 8 months; CD4E is 'toast'. No movement, just a solid 'lock-up' condition (as described to me). 120 k miles on vehicle. Of course I helped her locate a 'tour and she fell in love with it. Here is what I am seeking: Does anyone know how I should proceed in my seach for a good used CD4E? I will check local bone yards, but wanted to seek the wisdon of the CEG Team first. Anyone have a used unit they are willing to sell? We are in the Portland, Oregon area. What models of Mazda was this transaxle used in? I have limited knowledge of the CD4E; my 'tour is the Zetec with a 5 speed. Am I even in the correct forum for making this request? Is it thought a Northwest Forum would be a better choice. thanks everyone!!! Bill

You could always buy a rebuilt unit from: http://phoenixhardparts.com/I wouldn't recommend purchasing a used unit unless it was rebuilt.... Can you give us a little more detail on the problem. Was the atx slipping before it went out? What were the symptoms leading up to the current problem. what happens now if you put it in gear? In reverse?, etc. Regards, Bob

Hey Bob, I was JUST reading your ventures in regards to your auto transaxle rebuild. I have little info, at this time. I know there is a reported 'crack', as well as various mounting bolts 'missing'!! She was driving steady 40 mph when the 'lock' occured. A local, supposedly reputable repair shop, states the auto transaxle is not repairable. I do know that she can't afford 2 to 3k dollars in repair - the Contour will be sold for parts before that happens. This is why I was looking for a later model used one. If this were my Contour, I would definately follow your advise or attempt a 5 spd conversion (know anything about this route?). Do you know if she can go with a later model, say from a 2.0 auto transaxle 1999 or 2000 model? I see from car-part.com the following 'selection chart': A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID F83P-DA A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CA A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CB A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID F83P-DB M.T., 6 cyl (2.5L) M.T., 4 cyl (2.0L) A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS7P-AA A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS7P-AB A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CC A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID XS7P-CA A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID XS7P-CB A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS2P-AA Of the 2.0's will they all cross-over for use in her 1995 Contour? Any other assistance/direction would be most appreciated. So, was the common crack caused by the mount(s) going south? Thanks again Bob, CEG (and folks like yourself) alone is reason enough to purchase a Contour!! Bill

Contact Fastcougar...I'll let you look him up. He's got a complete CD4E setup (and I mean complete to the point of DIY) that he wants to sell. He might be a good source.

Thanks for the good word Jeb ... here is the information on what I have for sale. Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread, just offing a solution. Best part is that you will learn something by rebuilding the tranny yourself. BTW, all the tools are the one's that Bob used to rebuild his tranny.

I just read your opening post ... my setup will not fit a Zetec. Bob is correct, I would recommend Phoenix Hard Parts as well.

I am in salem and I did a swap from atx to mtx for cheap aka around $500, i don't remember the exact price. 9k miles on the swap and working fine. I found the tranny on ebay, but maybe you could find a car with a dead motor and a good manual tranny. Used atx trannys aren't the best option as you don't know the maintenance details on them.
ATX MTX swap, rear drum disc swap, drilled rotors, ported intake, optim throttle body, CAI, 7.5L MAF, adj. fuel regulator, longtube headers, underdrive pulley, no EGR, low inpedence bigger injectors, 2002 Focus Swap

Bill, Offhand I don't know what will fit from other years. If you were a diy type person I would suggest trying the rebuild yourself. With buying from Phoenix you get a dyno tested unit with a new torque converter. If the old atx is cracked then they won't accept it as a core so your price goes up about another 300 dollars or so. Still you get a dyno tested rebuilt unit with new tc. The crack that I had in my tranny was I due to I think high fluid pressures from worn valve body that created high internal pressures which also cracked my direct clutch housing.... If you plan on keeping the car for awhile, I really would suggest the rebuilt unit from Phoenix. I have two Contour's myself both 95's and I am planning to rebuild the other atx next year......that is if I can get FastCourgar to sell me back the tools!!! Regards, Bob

Any Zetec mated CD4E will work. Even one dating as far back as `93, from a Mazda. Thing is, I wouldn't suggest it. That would be like asking for trouble.
I would suggest going with the later models, as you suggested above, but check closely the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Reason being; In the middle of the build, that year, they switched from a mechanial instrument cluster (for the speedo & tach) to an electric. If your friends car currently has a mechanical, you might want to stay within the configuration, since you would have to change out the sensor and the instrument cluster.
There's several threads on this topic floating around here, so a search my prove fruitful here.
