Hey Bob, I was JUST reading your ventures in regards to your auto transaxle rebuild.
I have little info, at this time. I know there is a reported 'crack', as well as various mounting bolts 'missing'!! She was driving steady 40 mph when the 'lock' occured. A local, supposedly reputable repair shop, states the auto transaxle is not repairable.
I do know that she can't afford 2 to 3k dollars in repair - the Contour will be sold for parts before that happens. This is why I was looking for a later model used one. If this were my Contour, I would definately follow your advise or attempt a 5 spd conversion (know anything about this route?).
Do you know if she can go with a later model, say from a 2.0 auto transaxle 1999 or 2000 model? I see from car-part.com the following 'selection chart':
A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID F83P-DA
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CA
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CB
A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID F83P-DB
M.T., 6 cyl (2.5L)
M.T., 4 cyl (2.0L)
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS7P-AA
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS7P-AB
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID F83P-CC
A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID XS7P-CA
A.T., 4 cyl (2.0L), ID XS7P-CB
A.T., 6 cyl (2.5L), ID XS2P-AA
Of the 2.0's will they all cross-over for use in her 1995 Contour? Any other assistance/direction would be most appreciated. So, was the common crack caused by the mount(s) going south?
Thanks again Bob, CEG (and folks like yourself) alone is reason enough to purchase a Contour!!
Bill
