Well, I just replaced the 2.5L V6 in the 'Tour. It's a 98 LX, and the motor was from a 99 Mystique. The car and the new motor have about 70000 miles on them. When the 'Tour went out of commission almost a year ago, my wife bought a 98 Escort ZX2 with 35000 miles on it. She barely uses her car, has only put about 2000 miles on it in the year she's had it. The 'Tour is a really nice car and we love it, power seat, sunroof, spoiler, fogs, power everthing, silver frost, tinted, remote start, etc...... The ZX2 is pretty plan, power everything, spoiler, no sunroof, no remote start. However, having the engine fail in the 'Tour already once, how long till it happens again? What about the tranny? It's the CD4E, and they're famous for having problems. We would love to keep the 'Tour, but who knows how reliable it will be? Already it's skipping really quickly through the gears coming from a stop, then you press the gas a little harder, and it kicks into passing gear. This might happen once every twenty stop signs or so. What do you guys think???

CD4E can be reliable if you treat it well, and by treat it well, I mean change the fluid every so often (I do mine every 6,000 miles for added protection) And as long as you maintain your 2.5L it should stay running for awhile, Although I personally think the 2.0L is more reliable, the 2.5L looks fun to drive, how did your last engine go out? Many Contour owners have good luck with their Contours, some just so happens to be a bad contour out there every now and then.

I have 163,000 miles on my '99 Mystique with the 2.5 engine and ATX. I haven't had to do any repairs on this car whatsoever other than scheduled maintenance. I have the dealer maintain it according to Ford's recommendations, and have the transmission flushed every 30,000 miles as recommended by Ford. Based on my experience, you should easily be able to get another 70,000 miles out of your Contour, provided its given good maintenance.

-Mark- '99 Mystique LS, totally original (including the original water pump and the premium stereo)! Bought new in December 1998 for $21,000. 208,000 miles
