How can i get rid of that rattling like pinging noise? Its like a spark knock. I've tried higher octane and a new air filter. Any suggestions?

When does it happen first off?
I know pinging on acceleration is due to a really lean mixture I'm told.

Pinging happens at light to moderate load.

Pinging is usually due to a lack of EGR, but can also be caused by carbon buildup in the cylinders.

If you put in 93-94 octane and it dit not get any quieter, it may not be pinging.

I have had this problem also, I can hear mine when the car is in idle, ie startup. I don't konw if I can hear it anywhere else because I haven't gotten out at a stop sign to listen :-p. I have also put in the "high" octance and it made not a difference. I had asked my dad about it, because I thought maybe it was a spark plug that was not firing completely. The car accelerates with no problem though. I have poor gas mileage as well. I"m thinking it may be the EGR vavle itself, but no engine light.

I have pinging under heavy load, such as going up a hill. Mom's Taurus has pinging also. Main problem is too much heat in the combustion chambers. She has a Vulcan, and not a Duratec however. Try cleaning your motor out and get those temperatures down. Try a different gas station. My car pings bad with Exxon. In fact, I hate Exxon, but that's another story. Valero is the best (Diamon Shamrock) followed by Amoco.

A loud rattle at startup is the timing chain.

A slight rattle at idle is the valves.

A knock can be rod bearings or crossfiring plug wires.

Ping is only under acceleration.
