Not true, clearcoat will come off with lacquer thinner because of it's "hot" solvent type nature. But since it had cured it would've taken some real effort to mess it up. The semi-fresh paint was very prone to come off with little effort, and that's exactly what I would have tried to take it off.

i work at a tire shop every day, and we use sruff called liquid prebuff to get crap off wheels, but the onetime i saw it used on gunmetal wheels it took off some of the silvery finish and left it black underneath it.... just tell them to be careful.
