There you go, that is real satellite imagery:

"San Diego (Downtown) Mar - 2002 3 Inch "

The "3 Inch" is the resolution. And this is still just a commercial product

The list you're quoting from is closely related to the list found over at AirPhotoUSA, and those commercially available 3-inch resolutions you're seeing are aerial photographs, not satellite imagery.

Currently, the highest commercially-available resolution available in visible satellite imagery is 1/2 meter, provided by DigitalGlobe's Quickbird, and that's only in black/white. Color resolution will be smidge less than 3m.

I shoulda thought about it more - I beleive 3" is actually approaching or beyong the theoretical max resolution of a satellite due to light scatter in the atmoshpere (if I remember the discovery channel correctly???).

Oh well, I guess there are better ways to image than using the visble spectrum.
