Have you taken the piece off and looked at the back of it? I don't think you can just put the vent piece in. I think it's one big piece (thanks Ford!)

However, maybe some superglue can work for you (If the corresponding piece to the broken slat is still there)

hey thanks for the suggestion. now to remove the trim piece, the whole thing, how much work is involved in it. i'm hoping to find some of the pieces if they are still in there, and take the superglue to it, if not then i'll just remove all the little blades and live with just the side to side movement of air.
