Well Terry Haines, one of the power train engineers for the car installed mine unside down. I haven't died yet.

this sends a conflicting message, imho. he has a lift, and I am sure he has SF alignment kit, which is not required unless something goes wrong... if dealership mechanic can do it the right way in less than 1 hour, I don't see how TAH is saving time by doing it upside down. SF has to be lowered to get the LCA out and alignment needs to be done w/ new LCAs installed any-freaking-way.
on a side note. did any of you w/ upside-down bolts had to cut the bolt shorter? the clearance between SF and TX case is pertty tight. I would think that the powertrain flexes enough to worry about it.

roll your eyes at me all you want, it doesn't change the fact that's just not how i do things. it came from the factory the way it did for a reason , so i put it back that way when i serviced it.

Using your logic, we should never install aftermarket wheels, either, because they almost always require removal of the rotor retaining nuts. (Not to mention that most are not true hubcentric rims.)
It does seem safer to assemble it as you did, and yet, after almost 9 years and 70,000 miles, my bolts have not come loose, and nor have the bolts of many cars with more miles on the odo. Put together properly, whether head up or head down, it seems the fastener is sound, first of all, and also that the presence of 4 bolts (esp.) makes the simultaneous failure of all fasteners unlikely.
So, stay on your high horse all you want. The rest of us will just go ahead on foot.

Because he told me subframe has to come out or dropped. I'm guessing he has a way to do the LCA's without messing with the subframe.

Exactly. I'm guessing convenience & cost.

But your thinking has nothing to back it up. It's a facking bolt. Who cares which way it goes as long as it's in and tightened. Has anyone ever heard of one "letting go" if installed to tq'd spec? No.

I did not mean to imply either. Poor choice of words, I guess.

If one wants to be absolutely safe they could always safety wire it (the forgotten but still extremely valid security method).

PS - Along with cost/convenience factors there may well be a liability issue that is covered-off by the way the factory installs them.
