That's why all Jap cars (yes even those largely produced here in the U.S.) aren't "rated" over 300HP (350Z, EVO, STi, and the list goes on). The new 05 G35c's are rated at 298HP for this reason. The engineers could easily push the VQ series engine way beyond 300HP if need be. Sure the Jap manufacturers could produce "U.S. only" engine variants, but this minimizes lean production efficiencies when they do so, hence the reason these engines all stay under the "rated" 300 HP mark.
Not to be nit-picky, but there is no actual "law" prohibiting Japanese automakers to go over the 276hp limit. It was simply a "gentlemen's agreement" between the automakers themselves although all they simply did was label the engines being rated at 276hp, but in reality they would push upwards of 300hp to the wheels.
Nonetheless, that agreement has been null and void for the past 4 years or so. It's no longer an excuse for Nissan to limit the amount of power from their V6 powerplant.

When you say weak link...whats the issue? Failures with stock boost or failure with boost increase. I mean 440 lb/ft and nearly 400 HP is more than most any Contour will ever see..turbo or no.

Both....IIRC. The 01+ rods are weaker (I don't know the specifics on way) but the 99/00 trucks have a better rod. I think about ~14 and up is where the rods start seeing failure. Right now I'm more worried about spitting plugs than throwing a rod where I'm not. Originally posted by Dan Nixon: When you say weak link...whats the issue? Understood, I thought as much from your original post but there was nothing to lead me to this conclusion definitively. Live and learn!

Actually, I think several engines still use nodular iron cranks...Zetec for sure, GM pushrod V6s, and IIRC (not sure) the LS-1..anyone?

Just inhereted a 350z convertable for the winter. "Storing it" for the winter. The engine is amazing. Sounds awesome, the torque is like that of a v8. I will have to take it out once in a while during the winter...
