There may come a time when some games may be played on the system. I would like to have it built up to show quality of course, so I don't just want to settle with anything. If that was the case I could hook my old computer and run of of that.

I think moxnix has a good idea with building something based on the "Pentium M" series unless heat isn't going to be an issue. The Prescott core P4's run extremely hot and the 130nm core's put out alot of heat also. The Pentium M's have a better IPC than the P4. A Mobile Athlon XP would even be a good choice if heat is a concern. The Athlon64's are a little more pricey but run cooler than the latest P4's also.
P4's and Athlon 64's do have good thermal protection / clock throttling for hot environments tho.
Either way you go a Geforce 5700 Ultra or Radeon 9800 Pro card for graphics would be a decent budget choice and the Audigy 2 as someone has already mentioned for sound.
Keep us posted...sounds like a cool project !

The 9800 is a great budget card, but don't expect to run Doom 3 at huge framerates with it. If you want some show quality stuff, go higher end, like GeForce 6800 Ultra or RADEON X800 XT Platinum. As for the case, have you made a decision on that? Check out http://www.xgbox.com They have some pretty sweet looking boxes there, especially the Dragon, that thing is

that being said winamp is your freind

I got the Intel P4 3.0e, 800Mhz being shipped right now. I couldn't hold back, I found it for about 15-20% off at Tran Computers, check m' out. I was thinking about the ATI Radeon 9600 XT(128mb). It has fast 400Mhz RAMDAC speed, and an even faster 500Mhz GPU clock speed supporting DDR SDRAM & MPEG 2 decoding/formats.

not a bad purchase, even though I hate Intel, I can respect that choice, it should make for a nice multimedia setup. As for the 9600 Pro, it's a little back in terms of actual capability. You should be able to find a 9800 Pro for as cheap as a 9600 if not a little bit more. Just a ? though, why would you need MPEG2? You really couldn't use the DVD in a tower or laptop unless it is really well protected from shock.... just a ? ya know?

I will be running an external unit mounted in an accesible place to avoid that problem.
A few people are recomending the 9800 pro, so I might check it out, but I don't fell right about buying a video card that cost more than my processor(I paid $170w/shipping). Anyone know were I can get that 9800 pro a little cheaper.

buying a higher end vid card is a better choice than you would expect, even though it is still kinda pricey.... I would rather spend the extra money than not be able to play games or watch DVD's at acceptable framerates.... just my opinion....

Just thought I would let everyone know what I did.
Motherboard: MCI865PE NEO-2P w/CoreCell Processor: Intel P4 3.0Ghz 800mhz FSB 1mb cache(runs around 45-49Ă?ÂșC w/fan, so I am thinking about water cooling) Video Card: ATI Radeon 9200 HDD: Maxtor 120GB ATA133 Memory: Kingston 512mb PC3200 DDR400(to start with) Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live5.1 O/S: Windows XP Pro CDRW Drive: Yamaha 20x10x40x DVDRW Drive: Sony (not sure about the read and write speed I got it out of another computer, but it works) Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse Power supply: 400W
I am going to rewire the case pwr switch so that I can turn the computer on/off from the front of the car. I would like to buy the touch screen monitor I saw on EBAY, but wasn't sure if it would be worth it. Any ideas on how I to get cool air from out side the car into the trunk capartment?
