Don't go dissing on your Mexican-produced Contour... There was a debate a few years ago on CEG forums regarding which plant-produced (KC or Mexico) Contours were better, and generally speaking the Mexican ones came out on top. Of course this might just be hearsay but I haven't had many major problems with mine and am quite satisfied with its reliability...

personally I'm proud to have that 3FA VIN

Dan, I take extremely strong exception to your statement. Not only is it racist but it is also patently WRONG.

I trust it wasn't meant in the manner it was actually presented.

Dylan, tell your sister to look at the new Mustangs.

Sure virtually no car today is 100% made in any one country. That is a product of many factors only one of them being that UAW wages force US automakers to source more out-of-country parts than before. Another is that most people unfortunately buy on price and precieved content/value alone and don't actually think much if anything about where a product is manufactured.

The preception and the reality are often far apart.

Honda/Toyota are generally considered to have very reliable vehicles but the difference between Honda and GM for defects in new cars (I believe it's within the 1st yr) is almost non-existant, within half of one percent!!!

As far as safety is concerned, I never want to go through another crash like the one I had in September, but I can tell you that I'm very glad it was in an SVT and not a Honda. I might have even come out better had I been driving my Volvo but that car is in a different category altogether.

The autobody guys I've talked to, and the fellows who've worked for DentWizard for a long time all say the same thing - Hondas don't usually do very well in accidents.

Mercedes are usually concidered to be very well built while Jags are thought of as being problematic. IIRC, in 2003 or 2002 Jaguar had the best quality control record of all Luxury Segment Cars and MB had the worst (I think this was the 1st 90 day figures).

Anyway, she'll go crazy trying to jump through all the content hoops, etc. Just tell her to look at a car that is built by Ford or GM. They're the only two that still have their ownership based in the US. Chrysler is owned by MB which means that like all the Japanese manufacturers the ultimate recipient of the benefits of the sale go to those countries.

Buying local, whether it's cars or hardware, groceries, etc., should always be of concern no matter where a person lives.

Regards, Alan

Bottom line- It really doesn't matter what kind of car she gets, as long as she is happy with it. Heck, Noble's are made in South Africa, the ones bound for the US at least. It really doesn't matter because the world auto industry in general builds and sources from several other countries anyways. I say buy United States-anada-exican-ermany-apan-weden-gland-fican-orea-inese brand.

Outkast, you're right, they are. The fifth one is Land Rover. Last I heard, Ford's share of Mazda was about 34% (giving them ownership/controlling interest/etc.).

My feeling is that while these makes are owned by Ford their coporate HQ's are located elsewhere and therefore a significant portion of their profits go back elsewhere rather than staying in the country where the car is bought.

That didn't stop me from getting a new Volvo, and wouldn't stop me from getting a WRX, etc., etc., but it would influence my decision, especially if it were a close call. As I said before, I like to buy as locally as possible, all other things being equal.

Yes, some domestic cars, like GM and some foreign makes, like Kia come off looking great quality-wise at delivery, but its the long term that counts. After ten years or 200,000 miles, which car is going to be running well? Your Chevy or your Toyota? Look at the resale values....that tells you how the public is voting.
