Thats a nice thought, knoppix really is quite nice. Too bad any windows boxes with a half a brain knows to password lock the bios then make boot order go to the harddrive first. That was what stopped me from doing the same thing in the computer labs here, but then i realized most of the boxes have manually configured ip address... so you'd have to boot into windows, write down all the information then assign that to eth0 or whatever. Good luck.
And just so this isn't a total thread hyjack:
Openoffice kicks ass, but the only thing I don't like is the powerpoint support. I went linux only for about 6 months last year and I found myself going to the computer lab to use powerpoint. Things don't work as nice, the formatting is screwed up and such... so If you are just viewing them, you can get away with it and pull all the information off, but it is horrible for creating. That was with version 1.1.0. May your switch to open-source go smoothly

If in doubt buy either Star Office (same thing) for about $40, or a cheapie copy of either MS Works, maybe even a cheapie corel.

...and more and more "no fault" clauses and indemnity clauses will find their ways into EULAs for Linux products to protect their user base as MicroSlurp slowly but steadily continues to lose ground to cheaper and more innovative SW.
Linux still isn't for the everyday user, but it's getting closer and closer.
I find anyone touting that MS would start to sue private users of Linux to be almost laughable. There is NO quicker way for that company to alienate even more of it's user base that it already has.

No you are not, the odds of them going after openoffice are slim, nevermind the individual user. Anyways, how can they even prove if you have openoffice or not.

Also note how quickly SCO dropped its threats to start suing corporate Linux users after the fallout from its lawsuits against EV1 and AutoZone.

Suing end users isn't just a good way to alienate, but also a logistical nightmare! The resources that it would require to track, and capture people would be totally insane!! Microsoft will only ever go after the big-scale pirates, and mostly distributors. Challenging each and every end user is not their way. If you look at Windows XP you can see the way that they are going, locking you out if you're not legal. Now there is of course a chance that they could 'lock out' (loose term) applications that they believe tolerate terms, but I would highly doubt this too.

Looks like I'm going to be migrating to StarOffice for the business suite and Mozilla for email. I'd download Thunderbird but apparantly only the email client part of Mozilla will sync with Palm. Of course now I've got to trade my PocketPC for a Palm...
