I have had poor gas milage since I have bought my car, but this morning I filled up, and I am getting 16 mpg! It Used to be 18 but now has dropped to the point where something has to be wrong. I cleaned out the EGR valve passage ways, and the engine light went off. I'm not sure what is wrong. Could it be the cat convertor? I also hear a small click at lower rpm, but once it gets passed 1800 the engine just drowns it out. The car has 70k miles on it, could it be time for new plugs?

clean the intake manifolds and see if that helps, also run some injector cleaner to see if that helps, if neither of those helps then we will move on to the next thing to try. with 70k i bet your manifolds are all clogged up with stuff. that should help alot if they are really clogged, if you need a how to there is on the main page

i would vote on the cat. Is the clicking sound, sound like a rattling coming from the exhaust?

I already ran Fuel injector cleaner through, and the clicking sound comes from the engine, not the exhaust. Besides if it was the cat then the car would be sluggish, and my car has no problem with acceleration. I"m going to look into cleaning the manifold.

Does the clicking noise change as you accelerate? If it changes speeds as you accelerate then it may have to do something with your valves or pistons.

the problem is I can't hear the clicking over the engine after 1500-1900 rpm. The motor running in idle almost drowns it out. So I'm not sure

I know the secondaries have importance at higher rpm, but do they affect gas mileage? And aren't they the little box that is up in front under the plastic peice? I have read the checking them part, but I wonder does anyone have pictures? I don't want to open it up, and go, um now what?

If you have an MTX then the rattling is probably just the gears. Changing your MTX fluid might reduce the noice, but if you haven't ever changed it, you should definetly do that.

Check your auto parts stores for a "3 step intake cleaner kit" (I used the kit from Berrymans). It contains throtlebody spray cleaner, intake manifold + chambers cleaner (via vacuum line), and fuel additive to clean the injectors and further clean the chambers. This is almost as good as removing your upper/lower intakes to clean them. I removed mine, but that didn't help clean out the chambers.. the kit made them all nice and shiny.

If you haven't replaced your plugs and wires you should also do that anyways.

I've seen people here recommend changing your oil and plugs AFTER doing the 3 step intake cleaner... which does kind of make sence.

If you haven't done any of these previously, you'd had better notice a difference after doing them. If you're still having the bad gas mileage problems... might want to test/replace all 4 o2 sensors (as the other guy recommended).

no, I have the auto trans. And my spark wires have already been replaced. I think I'm going to have to take it to get tuned.
