The other month she got into her Miata to go to the store for groceries , as she approached a busy intersection , she went to stop , but the throttle was jammed open ! It's an automatic , so the brake couldn't stop the car , with the throttle hanging open (and she couldn't push a clutch in) . She went through the intersection , luckily enough she avoided a major collision . After she got through , she reached down & turned off the key . She had the Miata towed to a garage , where they found that mice had eaten into her intake pipe & made a nest . Their diet of busted nuts had found their way into her throttle body and jammed the butterfly wide open ! She was so shook up , it was many weeks till she drove again . She now has traps everywhere in her garage .
Lesson learned ... Don't take mice lightly !!
Im confused, it was an automatic, but she couldnt push the clutch in?

his exact words were "couldn't push a clutch in" as in, it was an auto, hence no clutch.

Pimp hit it right on the head . That's why I worded it the way I did . As for throwing it in neutral , I think she was more imediately concerned about not crashing going around the corner before the intersection (it's in a rural area - 2-lane) . Plus , like was said , at nearly 70 I'm sure her reflexes are not like they were 25 years ago . I'm just glad she had the wherewithall to turn off the key before she hit a tree . She was lucky .

Earlier this year when I was working in an auto shop, I was doing the oil change on a customer's truck. IIRC, it was a newer Toyota truck, maybe a 4runner. Anyway, I pop the little door that lets me slide the air filter out, check it, and it wont go back in. Pull it out to see what I am hitting and find his airbox is full of dog food. I disassemble it further and find that he had about a rat sized opening in the inlet tube, then about 95% of the airbox was dog food. I told him about it and he mentioned that he had noticed that the truck had a lot less power lately and he had wondered why. We found a dead rat in a GMCs airbox about a week after.

Chris, I'd suggest you get the mouse out of there ASAP, if it's still there (likely is) using baited traps as others have suggested. Aside from the fowl odor they can create, more from their urine than their feces, they can do major damage to your car itself. I've heard of them chewing through wiring in the hardest to get at places. Sometimes, all the way through which is actually better as atleast you've got a definite lack of connectivity that can be quickly identified. Unfortunately, they can also chew partially through, leaving you with an intermittant fault that can be much more difficult to find . Regards, Alan

Y2KMondeoSVT, I have to jump in here to dispell your assertation.
This CAN'T happen. It's an Urban Myth, also the crap of lying lawyers in the old Audi lawsuits about 20 years ago.
First, the average modern braking system generates the equivilant to approx. 800 HP in braking force. What does this mean? It basically means that you would need to have an 800 HP engine in the Miata to overcome the brakes.
Second, the brakes on Miatas are big in comparison to it's weight and it's power.
In 78, I had an automatic 69 Falcon 302 cid (5.0L) with manual drum brakes (much heavier car - much strong motor - much weaker brakes). I had the car souped up a little (duals, 4 barrel carb, clutch fan, etc.) and took it out for a shake-down run after installing the carb and doing an initial tune. Upon leaving a stop sign I rolled out a little and nailed the throttle -I was trying to see if I could break the tires loose from a rolling 10 mph. Unfortunately, the tires hooked up too well and the torque broke a motor mount, pinning the throttle linkage wide open. It was one of those one block between stop signs deals, so I needed to stop quickly because I was almost at the next one and there was 4 lanes of traffic going across at the upcoming intersection. I stood on the brakes and did manage to stop the car - and then turned the key off. It took considerable effort but, anyone who has ever driven a car with manual drum brakes can tell you they take a fair bit of effort at the best of times. Point is, while I (at that time atleast) was likely stronger than someones grandmother, the force needed to overcome a 5.0L @ WOT w/manual drum brakes is far greater than that of a 1.8L @ WOT w/power disc brakes.
I defy anyone with a Contour/Mystique automatic, 2.5L even, to be able to have the engine overpower the brakes, unless the brakes at completely shot. My mother is 70 and I'm confident she'd do fine.

I've been talking about WOT. According to your info she was likely running at something much less than WOT which would make the scenario even more unlikely.
The most obvious explination is that she likely missed the brake pedal altogether, or something else, but definitely not that a 118 hp engine (part-throttle maybe 60-70 hp - WOT 118 hp) overcame a good 4 wheel disc brake system.

Simple explanation: Nanna freaked out and hit the afterbuners instead of the eject button and therefore couldn't slow the car down. I call BS on that too. She probably just freaked out.

if you are storing a car for the winter or something, i recommend Bounce dryer sheets. the original ones, not any of those funky flavors. buy a box and place them everywhere in the car. the trunk, interior and engine compartment. they should keep the mice away. i also recommend glue traps, that way the mouse gets caught and doesnt just eat some poison and crawl into your car and die.
