Yes im deffinetly a newbie please lets just cut to the chase. Ive got a '99 contour se sport v6 mtl. I had dual 40 series flowmaster mufflers installed from a y-pipe back (not much work) and I got the car back expecting a huge flowmaster sound(within reason small engine small sound) I got the gorgious flowmaster sound and increased low end torque dramaticly. i drive everywhere in 5th torque out the @$$. (pardon)

anyway ive read about the resonator removal as a major do. Im afraid Ill lose that precious torque i gained though. any numbers or specs or anything that can show me i at least won't lose that torque i gained from just replacing the mufflers? i want the sound volume badly but id rather settle with a quiet but powerful exhaust rather than loud and powerless.

can anyone please help me! cheers.

i had this exact problem when i pulled off my resonator. there was a noticable drop in midrange power. to fix it i put the magnaflow resonator from stazi on.

    thank you so much

i talked to a local tune shop (ok the only local tune shop kansas damn!) and the guy said that all he had ever seen was no increase in torque or very slight decrease(ahhh!) and some increase in hp. is it really worth it to remove my resonator? i really want more volume but i care so much about my torque its a blessing in such a small engine. i also asked the guy about dynoing my car. he said i sould dyno the car organize with an exhaust shop to get the resonator temporarily removed and then dyno it again and decide but im lookin at $55 for the dyno which i want to do eventually and however much it would be to get the resonator removed. then if i decide to keep the resonator i have to get it welded back in. more money out of my pocket.

Ive had one reply about puting a magnaflow high flow resinator in (cheers mate) but looking for some possible numbers, dyno readings? perhaps anyone?

any help i can get would be graciously accepted. if you have any knowledge please share it with me ive been tearing myself up long enough. cheers.

you can remove it but........having tried both methods myself i, in hind sight, would just get a high flow, straight through style resonator. a good one will improve flow and sound, like the one from a ceg'er named stazi. maybe he will chime in. or just pm him

you said you lost power about how much significant or do you think itll just put me a little above the stock reading instead of quite a bit above. or whatever. im getting desperate ive searched all the FAQs and found nothin consistent enough to help. you wouldn't happen to know anyone else who has put flowmasters on would you? cheers.

only a few of us have. most people here prefer the magnaflow or the borla. the flowmasters tend to be a bit boomy for some. assuming you are pretty much stock, there won't be much of a power difference. i would guess that you would be able to count the gain on one hand. if you are looking for power gains then there are other ways of getting it than stressing about your exhaust

Adding the resonator won't do much to the hp or tq curve, but it will attenuate the annoying drone you get from replacing it with just a straight pipe.

To be honest, the stock resonator is nothing but a big restriction, but replacing it with a Magnaflow resonator is the way to go as you lose nothing but the annoying drone. It won't sacrifice any power or torque.

i just got a 99SVT .

would like any feedback on removing the resonator and replacing it with a straight 2.5" pipe .

in this topic , there was mention of a drone . i know that is the case with 5L stangs running flowmasters .

if i retain the stock exhaust ( mufflers ) , could anyone confirm that this 'drone' will not occur .

just looking for cheap mod going to assist give in giving an edge over a Celica GTS (at the track) .

heres your answer.
straight pipe=drone
good resonator=attenuated drone=less drone
