So, now that I'm sober, I'm trying to figure out a way to get nice cold air into my car, all the time. I've come to realise that my car, just doesn't pull as hard after it's warmed up, as it does when it's cold....and/or extremely cold out anyways. So, I guess you could say I'm experiencing "heat soak." Now, I've seen some people fabricate heat shields to put around their filters...but I just don't like that idea. It seems like a waste to me. Unless it's ducted to the outside, you're still sucking in hot engine bay air, shield or not. I think it's safe to say the fenderwell duct is pretty much useless..especially with a KKM open element. So, I'm thinking, What's the best way to feed lots of cold, outside air to the filter? Well, have you ever seen the hood of a dodge viper? There's a black grille type thing on the hood. I have no idea what it does, but it gave me the idea of just sealing around the filter, and chopping a hole in the hood...of course dressing it up somehow so it doesn't look ridiculous, this way, the car is only breathing cold air that is coming through the hole in the hood. I guess the only problem with this is rain...is there anything I could do to keep water out?? I suppose other solutions would work rather than chopping a hole and putting a screen over it.....perhaps something like the z3 fender grille's, or, if I get some bondo and a junk hood, a sunken in type scoop..not something that sticks up like on a mustang or something. I think it's a good idea and would work, I just need to know what can be done to keep out rain/water. Please, any feedback is welcome!! laugh laugh

L8 apexing Aussie did a Naca duct on his hood for the same reasons you describe. Apparently it works pretty well, but IMHO looks kinda ricey/tacky. He also has some Cossie escort heat extraction vents on the hood, that also apparently work very well, but again, IMHO look ricey/tacky.

Take a look at the Cervini Ram Air hood for the Mustang. Same Idea. Cervinis

The grills on the Viper that your talking about would probably be for heat extraction, if they actually work. I like the NACA duct option myself since you can get nice cold air all the time, but it would be hard to keep rainwater out. Last ditch, just move up north, eh. laugh

Seems like in our cars the best option is a cold air box isolated from the engine heat. My idea is to modify my stock air box to allow a 3" inlet and run 1 3" hose to a "t" then run 2 3" hose to the front grill. the reason for the tee is so that when the 2 hoses merge into 1 the pressure and velocity is increased pumping copious amounts of air into the stock airbox (restrictor plate removed of course) through a K&N drop in into the maf then instead of a rubber boot going to the TB I'm making a custom pipe that will allow for IAC, and to EGR hoses to plug into. I simple screen will suffice for keeping large objects out of the air box and I'm thinking that you would have to be on a likea 8 hour drive for the pressure to work water up to the filter, and even then a well oiled K&N will repel what little mist is introduced. The only kicker is that I have no clue if the drop in K&N is large enough its about 88in^2 for area and I'm wondering if it would be benefical to creat a whole new box using a larger cone type filter. I'll figure that out later once I get this to work. Good luck!

What do you all think. Would this restrict the filters flow?

Also where could I fine a 45-60 degree mandrel bent pipe. I need to do some actual measuring but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Actually I guess I could just use a Silicon tube Elbow joint, wouldn't that work? Would that hurt flow at all?

Connect the TB -> BAT Intake Pipe -> elbow bend silicon joint -> MAF -> MAF adapter -> LARGE (8-10") Filter w/can or custom made heat shield -> Duct to cold air

Am I fogetting anything?

Of course you would need a battery relocation kit. What are your thoughts?

I was planning on getting some things from intenseperformance.com and building my own, but maybe you could... Not really sure if the Intake Can will help with heat soak, might just build a heatshield, and make some sort of duct which feeds in from the hood into the heatshield.

What do you guys think?

Mmm.. I like that design and running straight down like a SCA would alow for a easy duct to get to it from the front. I would be careful on how large the "can" is so that under certain conditions its not creating a vacumn restricing air flow. Proper sizing would viod that concern. Its definatly a noteworthy idea. Go for it!

I am in the process of fabricating a scoop into a headlight for another CEG'er. The bright section of the drivers light has been removed and a fiberglass scoop will be molded in it. The battery has been relocated so that gives more space. Once it is intalled, I'm sure pics will be available. The cool thing is, I'm making a mold for the scoop so it can be replicated.

Chris, that's pretty sweet. I don't know if I'm willing to give up a high beam, though...I like 'em laugh Good work!
Someone here had a great sheild that blocked heat from the MAF and the filter. Never thought of that, but I bet it helps.

I know theres an AEM civic intake with takes the filter all the way down by the bottom splash sheild...why don't we run a pipe up under the battery and towards the front grill?
