It's starting to get cold here in the Midwest, and usually about this time I have hockey to look forward to. But not this year...Maybe its just me but, but this hockey strike is B.S. I can understand the owners situations, if the league is losing money then something needs to be done. If the players dont wise up and address some issues there wont be an NHL anymore. How can people who get paid tons of money to play the sport they love be so greedy? I just cant believe this!

Try explaining this to the teachers who get paid far, far, far, far less to educate our children. Versus an athlete who makes millions in one season.
It's a damn shame.

Millionaire owners and millionaire players are screwin' with the game in a fight over money - I'm making a point of supporting the local teams this year with my attendance and my money. Saw my first Brampton Battalion's game and it was a lot more enjoyable than I expected.
I sent a letter to the Maple Leafs telling them the league can lock out the players as long as they like, but to not expect my support when they come back - and that's 6 season's tickets in my family talkin'
On the bright side, this lockout might actually be good for the grass roots side of the game if all NHL fans make a point of looking for hockey alternatives.

Nice to see someone who has their head properly attatched to their shoulders. I have been to many hockey games as that is the only sport I like. But to be paid millions, and then cry like a puss because your not making 2-10% more per contract is just bull how bout they take a pay cut. Pay some teachers their salary, and pay them the teachers salary. It's much much different when the shoe is on the other foot, I guarantee...

I too recomend watching other hocky alternatives. I use to work for the Plymouth Whalers(formerly the Juniour Red Wings), back in High School and early college days. The OHL is great hockey to watch, there salaies are only like $200 a month. Its all the future stars of tomorrow. But I look forward to NHL playoffs every year, its gonna be missed . But hopefully good comes of this strike.

I think the NHL may be done. Even if they were to come to an agreement(I don't think they will) most teams don't have the financial resources to tough it out till they win back angry fans or create new ones. One thing both sides don't seem to understand is that the percentage of peoples income that goes toward entertainment is getting smaller and the number of businesses that depend on those dollars is quite large so if you can't fulfill your customers needs they'll just go some place else. The owners will be fine. This is not their bread and butter. The players will have a little tougher time finding a job that pays as well!

The irony is that overall, NHL players have the lowest salary in all of the major league sports (I'm not counting MLS here).
Basebally, Basketball, and Football all have incredible salaries, but, they have a much broader audience. You can play these sports anywhere. Hockey? Natively, you cannot play it in Florida, Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, and southern California. That eliminates the Panthers, the Hurricanes, Thrashers, Stars, Coyotes, Ducks and Sharks. These teams are losing money at a steady rate, as nobody really cares. It expanded far too quickly. Stick to the places where you get ice naturally, and people still love the game- Boston, NYC, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota.

Find a college team to go watch. I know they're more abundant than McDonald's up there. I just got back from the UNO(maha) game versus Bowling Green. I was sufficiently entertained.

Dead on although you can argue that there are some very successful franchises south such as the Kings and Dallas Stars. The one thing that I don't like to hear all the time is the blame always gets put on the players and people always say "they make so much money, they should stop whining" If your efforts are what makes your company successful and bring in millions of dollars, you should share in that success and your salary should reflect that. Otherwise, you have a bunch of owners some of whom have never put on a pair of skates in their life getting rich. One reason why it came to this is that there are plenty of professional hockey alternatives. Many NHL players are still playing professionally and making very good money playing in Europe so the owners can't grab them by the balls the way Football or Baseball owners can. Bottom line is that hockey has far too many teams in too many small markets like carolina. Put the league back to 6 teams and watch how successful it would be !!!!!
