I'm looking at renting from Enterprise, who offers unlimited mileage in certain states. If I travel to another state (Nevada), they charge for mileage. Is there any way for them to know whether or not I've been to NV? ie, do they track their cars electronically??

Anyone know?

They track their cars. They know how fast you are going and everything. I would be surprised if they didnt have a voice recorder installed. The last time I rented one they had someone following me in an f250 Ford. He showed up everywhere that I went. I wondered how he did that without following my rental car. I finally figured out that he was using GPS to track me. I went to 8 different places and that f250 showed up at everyplace with the same goon trying to look inconspicuous.

You probably just forgot to take your antipsychotic medication that day. But you are right, most rentals have tracking systems. Hello 1984!

why not just rent from a different place? I've had good experiences with Avis.

Was he trying to sell you a pair of speakers he had in the back?

It was snowing that day in Salt Lake City Utah so I rented a Chevy Suburban at the airport. I bet the Suburban cost 40 or 50 thousand new. It had the smoothest ride of any car I have ever driven except for the huge Lincoln town car that I borrowed from my uncle.

why in the world would a rental car company have their "men in black" follow you? are you on their most wanted list or something?

cost of rental car per day=$39.95
cost of covert ops agent per day=$100
making sure Con_touring doesnt curb the rental car's wheels=priceless

I have read that a rental company, maybe Enterprise, has been known to issue "speeding tickets" to renters if the tracking system clocked them going over a certain speed. Basically it's just a big ol' surcharge on your credit card.

I've only ever rented from Hertz, and I've been nothing but happy with them. I've gotten a Mazda 6, a Mercury Mountaineer, and a pair of Tauruses (one Duratec, one Vulcan) from them, never mind that I've always ticked the "Compact" selection on the reservation website.

this reminds me of a funny story. I was working as a claims adjuster for a worker's comp insurance company (quasi state co) and we had to rent a car for this injured worker so he could get to his doctor visits. he didnt have a car and this was cheaper than paying a cab to pick him up five days a week. anyway, this guy had this rental car for a few months and then moved back east....he took the car with him.....our company had to pay for the car and then try to recover the cost from his case. talk about "OWN3D!"

think that's bad, we had to BUY someone a BRAND NEW car (camaro) so he could drive from TEXAS to LA for his required dr. visits! he refused to fly and his only car was a broken down piece of sh*t. the doctor recommended (basically like a prescription) this for him so we had to buy it. people blame the injured workers and attorneys for the cost of WC but its really ALL from the doctor's. whatevery they say, we pay! (well, not me anymore )

I believe the case you're referring to was Triangle Rent-A-Car out of North Carolina using GPS tracking to ding a renter for excessive speeding.

IIRC, he refused to pay & they backed down after seriously bad PR in the national news.

As for others, I use National exclusively by company contract. Having rented cars for over four months out of the year all across the US & Canada, I have never received any notification of their ability to track speed or location. (Many times in 3 digit speeds)

*Opinion*
I would bet that only GPS mapping or onstar equipped cars could be tracked. These companies have a sh*tload of cars that they get for cheap from the automakers, I doubt they're going to spend any extra $$ for tracking capabilities given the low percentage of non-returns.
