This is a private shop, one with a quite a good reputation (so I'm not naming the shop in respect of their reputaion), the mistake, that requires the motor to be rebuilt, was nothing but a simple human error, possibly made by their parts supplier and not them, it isn't certain, all that is for sure is that they did not double check to ensure things were correct; Oooops, I hold no grudge. (as long as fixing it doesn't end up costing me anything more than time. The car would be in storage right now anyway, so it's not like I'm missing out on driving time)
I believe that if they say a bolt is reusable, it very well "might" be, but I'd rather do the checks and be sure, as opposed to taking chances. You might say that it is ridiculous to think that a TTY bolt is reusable, but this shop has ~25 years of history building very successful race engines, and I am inclined to give them some credit. If it wasn't for the fact that I am going into build two within four months of starting build one, I'd take their word, but this time around I am not allowing for even one assumption

Regardless of what these guys tell you, the bolts are NOT reusable by design, and if you don't want to be rebuilding the engine again in the very near future, you won't reuse them. (If you would like to know my "credentials" feel free to PM me)
That said, its your engine, you have to live with the consequences. Do what you wish, but if you come back and complain about it, I'm not going to allow it.

Fella, TTY means Torque To Yield...what is "yield"ing: The plastic deformation/elongation of a part by subjecting it to a stress that eceeds it's elastic limit. i.e. like stretching a piece of toffee - once you pull on it enough to were is stetches out and doen't go back to it's original shape, it has "yielded" meaning that basically you're breaking bonds within the molecular structure - key word BREAKING. So once a TTY bolts has been used, it's basically been stretched to a point were it won't shrink back and subsequent stress (i.e you tighten it more, or fatigue strees from it being subjected to the reciprocating loads from a conrod) it'll break completely in no time at all. Now if you want to be a dumb-ass and have your engine let go again - go ahead reuse them, otherwise replace the damn bolts.

what everyone has said is exactly right, I have gone over stress, yeilding and falure many times in my mechanical and materials engineering classes
bolts are cheap, and there is only one way to do a job and that would be the correct way

It doesn't matter if they have 1000 years of service.
They are flat out wrong and screwed up.
Maybe a screw up to the point they did actual damage to your engine. What happens if one or a few of the main or rod bolts broke and now you need a new crank or rods or $$$.
They better be doing more then just looking at it. Worst case scenario it may require a FULL rebuild with many new parts at this point and after what you have stated I WOULD NOT trust this shop. If they were dumb enough to screw up once & blow smoke up your ass about it what makes you think it won't happen again when they AGAIN try to cut corners on this NON-PAYING LABOR they are doing.
What a crock of sh~t man!!!

engineer #3 so far. i havn't even though of materials since my last material selection class. and i can't wait untill failure analysis next semester. 5 more months then it's off to Roush or GM proving grounds :-D...I don't even want to start talking about Masters yet
p.s. anyone need a quality control/DOE guy?

I'm not going to argue about this, I've never said that I was planning on reusing the bolts. All I have said in regards to reusing the bolts is that were circumstances different, I would be inclined to trust their judgement. I am confident that were I to reveal who is working on my engine, most of you would find yourselves in my same position of trusting the shop, yet doubting based on everything you've been taught.

Let's say this is Roush, rebuilding your engine, for point of argument.
If some assclown told me that we could reuse ANY TTY bolts, I'd have a word to his superior. That way of thinking is assinine and unprofessional.
I wouldn't let ANYONe reuse TTY bolts on my engine.
