Really?
LOL!
I don't think we've got the weather, distance and resupply issues that the 16th Panzer and other divisions faced in making it's way into Stalingrad for starters...
...and unless you are comparing these Islamic extremists to the 101st Airborne that held Bastogne until Patton arrived, I'm not seeing too many comparisons there.
My Pacific theater knowlege is weak and my Korean War knowledge SUCKS, so I'll not counter these...
The smart extremists will "meld" back into the remaining population and do what they have been doing in Baghdad for close to a year now: hit and run tactics.
The dumb ones have dates with Allah that the USMC and Iraqi Army will help arrange soon enough.
Unless I'm missing something here, it's "Bagdad: The Sequel". The post-operation efforts, troop strengths and rebuilding will tell the true tale if we have learned anything from the miscalculations we've made in the Iraqi capitol.
EDIT: Funny you mentioned Stalingrad. If you are into an available and recent read on Stalingrad, pick up Antony Beevor's book on it.
I'm rereading it and this is the 3rd time for me.

Out of a country of 25 million, how many do you think are actually carrying a gun ... 100,000? 500,000? a million, maybe 2 million (that's roughly the size of the Chinese army I think)
Still leaves 23 million non-combatants who cannot leave; have no choice but to be there and probably weren't asked if they wanted to be in the line of fire.
I think they deserve to be considered in everybodies well wishes about the safety of those involved in the attack on Falujah.
Time for a little perspective:
Every male over the age of 17 is guaranteed to have at least one AK-47, and likely many more than one. Now, do the math.

PDX was mocking me for saying this battle is no less dangerous or less important than those battles. He and Napoleon used to chum it up, so maybe he's seen more important battles. You can't knock PDX's expertise, there is a lot we read in ancient history books that he once read in the newspaper. I'm certain a reference to LBJ is coming now...
Battles always gain importance retrospectively. Whether you approve of the Iraq war or not, history will judge its significance. Until then, I will hold any sacrifice of American life with the deepest appreciation and greatest honor.

You raise possibly a good point - how many people in Iraq are potentially armed insurgents? I'll see what statistics are available to do the math ... in the meantime could you please provide sources re: your point about gun possession?

After my family and friends had suffered for time untold under some jackass who got his rocks off tossing petty theifs off of buildings or shooting people who voiced opposition in the back of the head... i'd probably say hey come in can i get you a cup of coffee? just a thought.
This moral relitavism you profess to be so prevalant is pure b.s. every grown man and woman knows right from wrong and the gray line you hold so dear is only so wide my friend. Lets not forget these dolts, twits, idiots, numbskulls, and retards are not just killing american soldiers, they're killing their fellow countrymen, muslims, and children too.

word. i totally can buy that. my cousin has shown me actual video footage of "innocents" running and stashing their guns when they think a patrol is coming. the poor non-modern world bastards dont know theyre being watched from the air from 20 miles away! they think our soldiers on foot have to actually "catch" them in the act, so to speak. that's what you get for messin' with the most advanced military force in the world! too bad they occassionally get lucky
