The reason that it can't be used in the ATX is simple - its a different transmission. Same reason the part can't be used in the Getrag 6-speed, or in a Taurus. Each model of transmission is pretty unique, the only case I've heard of that used the same differential for both manual and automatic transaxles was in the Neon (and JA sedans). More typically, they're supplied by separate companies, designed by different groups of people, so they have little in common...

Just thought I'd add that a cast housing is definitely better than a machined billet housing. The grain flow of the metal, although not as superior as a forged item is far better in a casting than a billet (which has no grain w/respect to the shappe of the object being machined from it flow per say).
Hence I would be biased towards the Torsen. We make billet stuff here at American Axle, but only when we don't have time to make a casting or a forging. Billets have very poor strength/stress distribution compared to castings and forgings.
Mind you unless the casting is normalised and case hardened it can have HUGE grains in it which make it weak.

Yea if Ford used the Torsen in the 500hp FR200 then I'd have to say it will hold up just fine in the Contour. I'd go with the cheaper one if it was my choice. They both seem fine.

Thanks Rick
Not sure what I was thinking, transaxle transaxle, been having senior moments all too often, @55 it's way to early.
You would think that diff area would be the same but with you're bit of inside info I understand why not.
Thanks again
