I previously posted because I was getting codes P0401 (Bank 1 Cat) and P0420 (EGR Low Flow) on my '96 4 cyl Contour.

I read many (MANY) searches about CATs and some felt that a good, hard run or loading the CAT with gas or another flammable cleaner could get it hot enough to burn off contaminents and "rejuvinate" it.

Well, after weeks of re-triggering the P0401 CAT code, I have embarked on a 2700 mile drive from NJ to AZ. After the first 700 miles that P0401 Code is GONE and does not return (I took along my scanner and reset the codes every 200mi to see when they recur).

Evidently, the high speed highway driving has helped. I have averaged about 72mph now for 1500mi (33mpg avg fuel consumption).

it's a temporary fix. The way we do it in the shop is kill spark to two plugs (one on each bank) and rev the engine while watching catalyst temp with a pyrometer. At 1800 degrees, we restore spark and let it idle. repeat when it cools to 1000 degrees. For the realy bad ones, we kill spark first, then rev to 1500 degrees, then kill the injector on the cylinder with no spark, and run at high rpm to 2000 degrees. Restore spark and fuel and idle until 1000 degrees. Repeat as necessary until the front to rear switch rates look right. Have a fire extinguisher present!

They are heating the hell out of the cats by putting raw gas through the system. Appears to similar to the B12 technique. I agree with having fire extinguisher present. This work?

it varies - Tried it on a 04 taurus that broke a valve spring. Wiped the convertor on that side. Fixed the spring and scrubbed the convertor. Switch rates looked great. Released the vehicle and it came back 1000 miles later. Had to replace the convertor on that one. Vehicle only had 15k on it so it was all warranty. Also had a 96 explorer with 250k on it and after a scrub it's worked great. been about 20,000 miles so far... When my vehicles pop this code, I'll do the same to mine. Cheap fix.
