Ok this has been brought up a number of times in this post and I would just like to varify that we do not only use 10% fof our brain if that is what you are implying. In fact we use all of our brain but not at the same time. Each activity that we do uses a different part of the brain so it is wrong to think that we do not use parts of our brain at all. Which is why if Mary J were to be killing parts of your brain, it wouldnt go unnoticed. I'm not by any means stating that it doesnt affect your brain, I am just saying that there arent "parts" of your brain you do not use.
"The highly specialized regions of the brain give some insight into the many functions that the brain is capable of doing. So the development of the brain into specific sections that have been researched to facilitate specific functions, provides evidence that these regions are active in a normal humans lifetime. The fact that the brain has a highly ordered procedure for developing, leads researchers to believe that each region of the brain is essential. In fact, researchers have found several regions to account for one function, to imply that the collaboration of several brain regions is sometimes necessary for normal functioning. The 1012 neurons in the brain have not all been researched for activity or not, but researchers have found no evidence for unused abilities or large, unused regions of the brain."
Do not use big words when dominitave ones will suffice.

Keep excercising and stay consistent with the regimen. Just as important, clean up your diet if you aren't the healthiest of eaters.
NO carbonated drinks of any sort and totally can the junk-food sugar intake. You'd be amazed at what doing this and this alone can do to your energy levels....
I had numerous chemicals running through my system in my earlier days and while I never stopped lifting or playing sports (track, racquetball, basketball), once I stopped playing with the sh!t, I noticed much better coordination and reaction times, in addition to overall endurance. I've never gone "cold turkey" with excercise, so I couldn't tell you how long you've got ahead of you to build your body back up to where it used to be. From seeing others go through a "re-entry" back into a serious excercise regimen, it IS going to hurt like Hell for a while, though...
No matter if you are intent in sitting on your ass for the rest of your life or if you are gunning for an Olympic record, getting off of that crap (and staying off) can ONLY do you good...
To be bluntly honest, I don't think there's a 100% certain answer to how much damage your lungs have taken. I'm sure there exist medical tests that can measure much much oxygen your lungs can absorb in comparision to a "healthy" set of lungs, though good luck getting insurance to pay for that without some sort of acute respiratory problem.

since i am a respiratory therapist i guess i know a little about this subject. tests do exist to measure the amount of oxygen in your body and this is called a blood gas. you need to have a set of pulmonary function tests done to see if there is any damage to your lungs. as far as permanent damage to your lungs goes there is no way of knowing at this time. some people smoke their whole life and die in their 70's and 80's from some other problem such as heart related problems. oh yes that's right smoking causes heart related problems too as well as a host of other problems. as far as the body regenerating itself every 7 years then why do we fall apart when we get older? if you quit smoking your body will try to HEAL the lungs but only the parts that are not PERMANENTLY DAMAGED. i am not saying that if you smoke 1 cigarette that you will have permanent lung damage because people react differently to cigarettes and other other substances. but i have told this to many smokers and their families and nobody wants to listen until we have to tell them that they are going to DIE FROM LUNG CANCER. THEN EVERYBODY WANTS TO LISTEN AND FEEL SORRY THE SMOKER. yes i feel sorry for them but how many times were they told to QUIT SMOKING!!!!!!

Well, hopefully here's some good news for ya... I used to be a cross-country runner in high-school as well. I couldn't quite run 14mi, but I had a great recovery rate. (Good heart.) My Junior/Senior year I began smoking (not cigs, either), and then smoked both thru college. I then joined the Marines. (Wake-up call, heh, try that.) For the first 2 weeks I felt like you did, but it doesn't take long for you to build back up your tolerances, just take it slow. (Unlike the Marines, which forced us into 3-4mi runs almost daily.) By the time I graduated boot-camp (3mos) I was in impecible shape again, and could run better than I did in high-school. I have since started smoking (both) again, but I now keep up on my workouts (non-impact only for me now, because of injury), and I can say I am still able to out-sprint and out-distance most people. You still have a chance, its just easier when ya quit. E1
