I bought a 95 contour with the 4 cylinder motor and automatic. The fan comes on when the AC is turned on but it doesn't seem to come on with the engine temperature. The temperature gauge in the car doesn't register anything, it barely moves when you turn the car on. The top radiator hose is cold while the lower hose is warm. The blower blows heat so I am sure the water pump is fine. My question is when I replace the thermostat will this fix everything or do I need to replace the temperature sensor too? Is this whats causing the fan not to come on except for when the AC is on? I just bought this car for 600 dollars and have replaced one motor mount myself and going to replace the other one. I also had the typical wheel bearing problem on the right front wheel so other than that I'd say I got a decent deal. Thanks ahead of time.

If your Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor was bad the fan would stay on all the time and your car would go to "base timing" meaning it wouldnt advance it to far.

The thermostat is now replaced and the top radiator hose gets warm....but the thermostat still reads below any of the marks and the fan only comes on when the AC is turned on. So any ideas?

Yes, first off many people including me have said their temp. gauge doesnt read correctly, mine hasnt read correctly in who knows how long I got the car at 47k and it didnt then.
Also the fan doesnt come on until the car reaches a certain temp.
You need to find out what your ECT is saying, if your ECT isnt reading the temp. correctly your fan will not come on, for example if your ECT just said 150 degress, and neevr got to like 180 or 190 whenever the fan kicks in then it wouldnt come on.
Also the fan automatically comes on when the A/C is set to high position.

Hope that helps.

Guess I'll be busting out the dmm tomorrow while at work and bringing it home to test the temp sensor. I heard it's not real expensive so I'll just pick one up on my way home too. I hope this fixes the problem cause I don't like not knowing if the motor is going to over heat or not. I also don't like the fact that the fan doesn't come on to cool the motor down. Thanks for the info.

There are two sensors. Actually, I think one is referred to as a sensor and one as a sender. The sensor (ECT) sends a signal to the computer, to control various engine/fan functions. The sender sends a signal to the temperature gauge. Both the sensor and the sender are located near the thermostat. The ECT is just above the thermostat, and the sender is just below. They will cost around $15 each, give or take a little.

I checked the ohm on the top sensor and when I pulled the plug off the fan kicked in and the motor went into a safety mode. I checked the sensor with a ohm meter and got a reading from 34.7 when the motor was cold down to 10.3 when the motor was warm. Trying to find out where it should read but can't find anything. The lower sensor which is supposed to send the info to the gauge only showed one reading with the ohm meter and that was 24.8 and never moved. So does anyone know what all of this means? I am asuming that sense the temp sensor for the gauge didn't change thats why the gauge doesn't show any temp. Does this sensor control the fan? I think I might replace the relay under the hood for the fan in the underhood fusebox too and see if that fixes it. I just want to make sure the car will not over heat on me when I go down the road and the only way I know to keep an eye on it is to use the temp gauge.

Alright I did the trick grounding the white/red wire of the temp sender plug to a clean ground and tested the temp gauge. The gauge went to hot so I know the gauge works and that wire works. Weird thing is that someone spliced in a new plug to the temp sender. I replaced the tepm sender and temp sensor now and still no temperature reading on the temp gauge and the fan still only comes on when the ac or defrost settings are used. I guess I shouldn't be worried about overheating since I've replaced and checked everything. I just wish I could tell what the hell is causing all of this. Could the relay in the engine fuse box for the motor fan be bad and how do I know? Anyone know how much one of these costs?

I change every possible thing and still had problems, it was a false contact where the energy cable plug into the fan connector it was kinda lose and as soon as I press it in fan starts...solution cartoon board.. hehe... problems went away till not long ago that I am realizing that the flow of coolant in my radiator lines isnt flowing properly so that means radiator change is next. I realized of this very last issue cuz the gauge is on letter MAL and as soon as i step hard on the gas the flowing kinda unclogged and run thru cooling it down very fast to the middle. Hope it helps
