My '96 4cyl Contour (137K miles) has been coding P0401 and P0420 indicating LOW FLOW DETECTED EGR and AFTER-CAT O2 READING OUT OF LIMITS.
I replaced both components (as well as the plugs as they were worn to 0.070") with new ones and am coding the same codes after about 30 miles driving.
The car runs well, but occasionally has some off idle hesitation if one trys to accelerate VERY gradually, and occasionally will surge VERY slightly right after torque converter lock-up, but then is very smooth.
My Haines says that the EGR is controlled by an ERG SOLONOID and EXHAUST PRESSER DIFFERENTIAL SENSOR (both mounted on teh firewall behing the intake muffler above the throttle body).
Before I spend more money on possibly good parts, is this a problem anyone here has had and solved?
The car is new to me, but was dealer maintained by the P.O. with all service done on schedule. The car looks like a 50K mile car at most and burns no oil. I have all of the servive records as well.
My state has a VERY strict inspection and will flunk any car showing a pending code or MIL light so I need to fix it.
