My title says "LX/SE/Sport" ... got in a debate with my insurance agent because the title had "sport" in it (costs more) although the car wasn't a Sport model....

Funny thing is "SPORT" only gave you alloy wheels, rear spoiler and a cute lil decal on the trunk..how would they justify any increases in your premium for that?

I don't have anything in the book or at the back of the trunk saying what it is, it's just wrote "Ford Contour Sport". One thing I know is that it's not a SE, because they're only made using 6 cylinders motors and mine is a 4 cylinders.
I bet you can tell by looking at your seats. If they're completely fabric-covered, instead of fabric-topped and vinyl-bottomed, it's more likely an LX. We have an LX and had a GL, and that was one big difference between the two. Power seats also might be a difference.

Are you sure? My 96 (made July 96) has leather, power everything incl seats, sunroof, etc.. oddly enough it is badged as GL (but ownership reads CLS). No matter - it GITS up and goes and is comfy.

Actually, I see a lot of Pre98's that say Contour "sport" and nothing else on the back. Basically its a contour GL, but with a Tach and the alloy wheels, maybe power windows/locks, but thats a long shot.

The 95-98 LX and GL were real close in spec (maybe too close). Mostly the difference was in seat cloth, wheels, and standard features.
Easy way to tell is VIN Code: 1995-1998 P65 = GL P66 = LX
1998.5-00 P65 = LX, no Sport package for these LX years, which were more stripped then the GL's were. P66 = SE Story of the late model SE told 100 + times
Why would an insuranace co. charge more for the "Sport"? Any excuse to make more $$$$$!
Why did they downgrade the SE? They had the SVT, the SE was watered down on the Taurus and Escort for fall intro of the 1998 models, so the early intro'ed 98 Tours were changed to follow along.

They're all GL's it just depends on the options chosen. My GL has a V6, power windows, Locks, A/C, ATX, Cloth seats and isn't a Sport model.

I am possitive. I worked for Ford thru 98 and saw lots of tours. Leather was an option..even on SE models 95-97. My friend has a 96 SE roof and cloth. Talk about odd.

96 SE with cloth and sunroof is not odd. It's not even unusual.

it is odd when many dealers would order their stock with leather and a roof in order to make higher profits when ppl would purchase the vehicle. It was more of a selling point to push the SE to the upper luxury of the contour line. Leather and a roof just makes sense when you are trying to sell luxury.
