First of all driving 35 mph in 5th gear is just rediculous.
I drive in 5th gear when i'm going 35. If your just cruising and don't need to accelerate, just need to maintain speed, it's a good rpm to be at. Runs a little less than 2k at 35, which doesn't torque the engine or cause any problems. So I wouldn't say thats rediculous. I'm trying to pick a fight too   lol but it's all fun and games
