hey, ive got a red 98 CSVT and i was just wondering what the perfect rpm's to shift at would be for each gear including what rpm i should drop at? the current mods as of now are an intake, no cat and a high flow resonator, thanx in advance.

It depends on what you are trying to do.

On full out acceleration the SVT likes to be pushed right up to red line without hitting the rev limiter. Personally I wish the rev limiter was just slightly higher, about 7200 RPM. My car is still making a lot of power when it hits the rev limiter.

If you have no need for such a burst of power, then you can skip 2nd and 4th gear, or even accel up to about 35 in 1st and shift directly into 5th.

Most anything in between.

i've never gone up to 35 in mine, i just don't even like the sounds of the engine working so hard in first haha- but i've skipped gears just like he said above... i usually just shift at 2800-3000 ... unless i'm "having fun" with someone then i'll take it to nearly red- i too, wish that our top was just above 7000...

The Contour does not lend itself to a high rpm start. It is easy to induce wheel hop and then have the final drive in the trans break.

If you add the inserts to the motor mounts to stiffen up the mounts, you will diminish this effect, but it will still be there.

The final drive in the trans is the weak point. It is the main reason that people add either a Quaife (sp) or a Torson LSD unit. It is also nice to have the LSD, especially in snow. It also provides more control carving your way through a fun canyon.

Even with those modifications, the Contour really isn't a drag race car due to the front wheel drive and poor weight transfer on acceleration.

So in stock form you don't want to have the engine reved much if any when releasing the clutch.

Yeah, I've got the exact same setup mostly, and the Contour does not like to be dropped at all. between 2 and 3k is probably the best place in order not to induce wheel spin and hop on great acceleration. If you want to save fuel though, and don't mind shifting a lot, shift between 2000 and 2500. I personally shift right after 2000. My engine doesn't torque or mind it, but then again, I maintain it very well. when i got the car, I had to keep revs above 2k always, or it would torque like mad, so it depends on ur specific engine characteristics. but between 2k and 2500 is good for fuel. I consistently get around 22 or 23 mpg in the city, which is [censored] good I must say.

I normally shift at about 7300-7400rpm.

Well except while the engine is still warming up then I do the 1st to 3rd or 4th skip shift.

A lot of times it's the rolling 2nd gear start to 4th skip shift though.

Usually 1st and 2nd each to about 3250 then to 5th in city traffic. Usually take it up to 5000 for on-ramps untill I hit the "speed limit".

Not trying to be disrespectful here Big Jim, but why in the hell would you do that? First of all driving 35 mph in 5th gear is just rediculous. And if it's that big of a pain to shift your gears more than once, why would you get a MTX? There isn't anything wrong with skipping a gear every once in a while, but from 1st to 5th? I couldn't disagree more. That would involve either flooring it in 1st to get to 35mph, which would indicate that you're in a hurry and in which case why would you then shift into 5th? Or the other option is to accelerate nice and leisurely to 35mph in first gear, in which case there are going to be people a block away with thier hands over thier ears screaming "shift already!". This is just my opinion Jim, and I hope you don't take too much offense.

If you are racing, shift right before the rev limiter, but don't drop the clutch at all. Ride the clutch a little when launching your car. Dropping the clutch in these cars is like kicking your dog....It just makes you feel bad.

so then I assume holding the brake and gas to get some wheelspin in first on the atx is bad too. Just wondering-how else to get a good launch in a atx? I know reving it in neutran and throwing it in gear is just stupid, which is why I don't do it that, but there is little power until 25 or so. I would have gone manual hands down if I had the choice, but my grandparents gave me my car (even though it was in poop condition) so I can't be picky.
