Bwahahahahaha!!!! You're are truly disconnected; but that's ok, it's to be expected of someone so far up GWB's butt.

The story of the Red Sox transcends baseball because it's a story of the long-time losers FINALLY winning. There are teams like the Sox in every sport. Teams with a history of coming oh-so-close. The Sox, with their habit of blowing it, were the posterchild for capable teams that couldn't win the big ones. That they finally did makes their win such a big deal.

How does politics have anything to do with a discussion of sports.

So a sucky team finally won. It's not as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. Sure it's sorta interesting, but definitely not the biggest story in 25 years. Maybe biggest in baseball since all the homerun stuff (homerun stuff was definitely bigger), but definitely not biggest of all sports, even in just the past year.

Don't believe the hype. I can think of the same kind of garbage transcendance interpretation for the Marlins winning last year. Again, those in Boston and New York would be schocked to learn the sports world does not revolve around them.

Biggest night in sports?

THat is the title.

In the last 25 years, I think a few things would be comparable or surpass the Red Sox win.

I can't logically put Lance Armstrong on this list because cycling doesn't have the following in the US and rightfully so. It is fairly unwatchable. Hearing on the radio that Lance won a leg is nice, but hardly exhilarating. Obviously, we all appreciate the story and the effort.

McGwire breaking the record was absolutely a bigger night in baseball, to suggest it wasn't is shortsighted, IMO. The HR record was bigger in baseball than the so called Curse. If someone ever breaks Dimaggio's record, it will also overshadow this championship.

The Pistons original championships (biased opinion obviously) revolutionized the game. The Red Sox championship aside from the curse story, was just another team spending a lot of money and buying themselves a championship. This years Pistons championship may serve to lead another revolution to return to fundamentals.

Patriots first superbowl victory, on a national level is as big of a story because of Footballs enormous popularity advantage and the then ultimate cinderella story. Although, I think the Pistons dismantling of the vaunted Lakers was a bigger upset.

In the US, Soccer is irrelevant. If we are talking world sporting events, the Red Sox victory will probably be mid pack on the list.

I guess I hate to overblow the significance of an event that was based on futility. But at the same time, I understnad how the real fans feel the way they do. If the Lions ever won a Super Bowl, it would be the biggest event in Michigan sports history. However, on a national level it will not have much significance unless there is a side story. Like, if they won it this year against an undefeated Patriots team.

this wasn't really a red sox post to begin with it was a general sports post, no need to let it die. DNewman i agree with you and appreciate you sticking it on topic. I'm not sure what you mean about the pistons championships and changing the game? I would have to say the showtime lakers celtics classics of the 80's along with Michael Jordan transformed the NBA not the pistons. When someone is truly a fan of a sport and not just of a team, they have a better understanding of that sports overall history and can understand the significance behind the red sox. If someone is more of a casual fan that just follows their team, they miss out on a lot. another big sports story of the past 25 years was the New York Rangers winning it all, very similar to the Red Sox but not as much because of hockey's limited popularity.
