The story of the Red Sox transcends baseball because it's a story of the long-time losers FINALLY winning. There are teams like the Sox in every sport. Teams with a history of coming oh-so-close. The Sox, with their habit of blowing it, were the posterchild for capable teams that couldn't win the big ones. That they finally did makes their win such a big deal.
Don't believe the hype. I can think of the same kind of garbage transcendance interpretation for the Marlins winning last year. Again, those in Boston and New York would be schocked to learn the sports world does not revolve around them.
