It was about galvanizing a nation during a period of extreme competition with the Eastern Block, specifically the Soviet Union. The implications of that victory were far more reaching and diverse than the Sox win.
BTW, I'm a Sox fan. I visit Beantown every summer and most of my relatives still live in Malden, Beverly or Nahant.

Ultimately, mypoint was that the original post said it was at least the biggest sports story since 86. Miracle on ice was 6 years earlier. Lance armstrongs is quite impressive because of what he had come back from not really on a sports level because no one gives a rats ass about cycling. While the sox defeat of the yankees was definately more exciting and interesting, they still had to win the World Series in order to silence critics who otherwise would have said we choked. And for those who don't believe in curses, if you do some research and see just how many crazy things haave happended to the sox over the years, it's hard to think that there wasn't some other power in control

I find it difficult to single out one team to root for. But, if I were to root for one team this year, it would be Chelsea. Although they lost Jimmy Floyd, they more than make up for it with Robben. I can't wait until he gets back full strength. And John Terry is one of my favorite defenders in the world. If anyone has a chance at dethroning Arsenal, it's Chelsea.

You are unable to look at it objectively. I'm following the title not since '86. I can't agree with the title.

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Not knocking them as athletes, trust me. I'm simply saying that the popularity of the sport overall just isn't there. Incredibly intense physical sport

so what are the biggest single events in sports over the past 25 years? These are in no particular order
Red sox win the world series Mets come back to beat Red Sox in 86 series McGwire (and Sosa for that matter) break Maris' record Miracle on Ice US gets ass kicked in Olympic basketball
When you start intertwining sports with world events and "stories" it gets more interesting
Dale Earnhardt's death Lance Armstrong
What else guys???

by my own admission now, i have baseball on the brain. I think the nature of baseball lends itself to great stories because there is a lot of luck involved in being successful along with skill.
A lot of people also like to say that baseball isn't the most popular sport anymore and ratings are down etc, etc. I think you can say that about a lot of things. with the internet and 1000 channels on tv, people have a much wider range of interests now. By comparison, Baseball still remains one of the most popular sports around

It ranks below football (no question about that) and below basketball.
I guess that leaves baseball being more popular than hockey.
