Is 91 Octane bad for our cars?? My dad thinks that this car should only use 91 octane, I also read somewhere if I use 89 or 87 that the engine will make a nocking noise just like mine is doing right now.. I just started using 91 today.. The car feels like its got more power at low RPM's , but the price og 91 octane is 2 bucks which sucks!! SO IS 91 BAD FOR MY CAR OR SHOULD I USE 89??

The standard Duratec is designed for 87 octane. If you're in fact experiencing pinging and knocking, yes you should upgrade to a higher octance, and yes, it will make the car perform better. As far as what exact octane to use, use the lowest octane that eliminates the pinging. Anything higher and you're just wasting money.

In your '95 (or any "garden variety" Contique , for lack of better term) , you'll do just fine using 89 octane fuel (probably even 87) . You shouldn't see any ill-effects at all . 91 octane won't hurt anything either , except your wallet . The SVT line , however , is said to need 91+ octane due to higher compression & whatnot . Some have used less octane in their SVTs and said they noticed no difference . I won't use anything less than 91 in my SVT , though .

Actually Kremit did touch on something important: pinging/knocking could be caused by (among other things) lean air/fuel (vacuum leak) or increased compression, which could simply be a result of your higher-mileage engine accumulating carbon on the top of the piston. You should consider getting it looked at if the pinging persists or gets worse.

i only use 87 in my svt. it says use 91 only on the fuel gage but in the svt owner's manual it says that the engine has a built in "knock sensor" and you may use 87. it says 91 is simply recommended. i emptied my tank and filled it with 91 when i went to the track. per the butt dyno, no difference. its about 20-25 cents more per gallon, ie $255 a gallon out here.

No it will not make the car perform better in the "true" sense of performance increase.
It will get back some of the lost power the "knocking" is taking away from the engine but it Will Not add power above what the engine had to begin with.
Adding octane Does Not add power.
