The standard Duratec is designed for 87 octane. If you're in fact experiencing pinging and knocking, yes you should upgrade to a higher octance, and yes, it will make the car perform better. As far as what exact octane to use, use the lowest octane that eliminates the pinging. Anything higher and you're just wasting money.
