Not to mention that a few months after the accident, a received a pretty decent amount of money for "pain and suffering" on top of the $6,500 already paid out to fix the car. I received $1000, my brother who was in the car received $1000 also, and my friend who was in the front passenger received $500.

Well they are repairing what is on the car. And being that my wheels are Factory rims, they had no problem repairing them, not replacing.

But how and why were you compensated with cash? Did you sue or did insurance think you deserved it???

here in the US, especially CA, you can sue for pain and suffering injuries. this would include subjective complaints which are unlike broken bones. (ie sore back, loss of sleep, etc.) the insurance companies will often offer money up front and usually have the person sign a waiver agreeing that this amount will settle any further complaints. because....if they were to get an attorney and start seeing doctors that $1000 could easily turn into $10k, per person. they offer the money cuz they know what they potentially may have on their hands. ive had this happen to me too.

it sounds like things are QUITE a bit different in canada, which has its good and bad points.
