While leaving work, I heard a muffled pop and immediately heard what sounded like an exhaust leak. Pulled over and felt air pulsing from passenger side cylinder on rear bank. Noticed the plug was loose. Got the plug threaded back in, started it up....big pop, plug blown out again.

I'm at work waiting on the wrecker to tow it to shop near my house.

Any ideas? Anyone heard of this? Plug looks good. The threads aren't even messed up. Car has been running great. Just trying to get some feedback before the shop looks at it. I've trusted them with this car and my wife's car, but I always have at least some clue of what's wrong before I take it to them so I don't get caught by unecessary repair recommendations. I'm pretty lost this time.

Thanks,
Randy

Sometimes that can be repaired in place. There is a tool for installing threaded inserts into the head on the car. A few mechanics have the experience and skill to make that repair. Others don't. even if you find the right mechanic, sometimes the nature of the damage requires that the head be removed or even replaced.

I thought most mechanics could do a helicoil. I helped a friend do one and it wasn't hard. Only thing would be keeping the shavings from going into the cylinder.

I had the exact same problem on my wife's car not too long ago. Reference the following thread for the fix:

Spark Plug Thread Repair

Skip to the bottom of the thread for the instructions.

If that thread doesn't answer your questions, let me know.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. The shop just called and said that the threads are gone in that hole. They are going to pursue getting it fixed before deciding it has to be replaced.

I have no time or the means to tackle this myself but I appreciate the how-to info.

Normally the last person that puts in the Spark Plug may have used to much torque or did not use the correct OEM plugs.

Or it was cross threaded when put in.

I've seen that done many times with people that use power tools.
